Charactober : Week 2: Plant & Growth Motif : Rootwarden
Hello friends and community members,
This is my interpretation of the Rootwarden character from the Charactober drawing challenge of @london65. I like the motif for this week which is about Plant and Growth.
I used the following as my guide when I was planning the concept:
Themes: Nature reclaiming, sprouting life, forest kin.
Visual Tie: Vines sprouting from skin/clothing, fungi glow accents, earthy palettes.
Cluster Anchor: Branches, roots, and fungal crowns.
For the design hook I focused on these two:
Rootlike hair and fingers.
Stance like gripping earth.
Let me talk about my thought process and How I came up with my design
My character has those rootlike hair which I turned into horns and the fingers and feet look like tree branches and some roots on the lower end gripping the earth to give it that guardian vibe.
When I posted this initial sketch on snaps someone suggested that I add bulk to it to give that guardian energy. Yeah a guardian must look sturdy and strong and the stance must also show that see how it is gripping the earth?.
The fungi element are those blue flower like structures on the final edit, originally they are twisted roots just like in this stage of the drawing. I colored them blue eventually and now are looking like mushrooms. I still have those coiling and twisting structures in blue which could still fit that criteria of a root.
The color as suggested in the guidelines is earthy so I pick green and brown predominantly. At first the head has the same color as the arms and legs but I changed it to this grey shade to give it that effect that is was made old by the exposure to the sun.
If you noticed the image above I added on its left arm some protruding structures that could look like thorns or branches to give it that natural feel. The brown bark covering is slightly asymmetrical leaning heavier to the left which balances off the protruding branches I added to the left arm. The face is showing a little mouth at this stage wherein previously it was non-existent or covered.
One final touch are the red glowing eyes to tie it with my previous character the Orchardkin as they are in the same family and give them coherence.
