I've always practiced having ready funds for medical emergencies only. It is tragic to learn that lesson the hard way. Especially if you don't have an adequate Health Insurance program. While Medical issues have the first priority I have rules for other possible emergency cases thought out and prioritized in advance, because things tend to go wrong in short order.
