Happy Chinese Lunar New Year: High Relief 2014 Australian $1 Year of the Horse

My red silk Cheongsam hasn’t fit me in years. The last time it was tight a few spots so I doubt I’ll ever fit in it again. Time and gravity has caught up with me, so I now have this nice black Asian blouse with a loose fit, and makes for a nice background today. It’s Wednesday afternoon on the 18th, I have the family New Years dinner to attend tonight.

I regret not having the 2026 Australian Year of the Horse yet. For most of my 2025 stacking was focused mostly on gold and silver Maple leafs as the spot and retail prices were climbing. I do have the 2014 standard version 1 Troy oz. strike and this High Relief Version. The little story behind this coin is that I received this coin from ‘Shadow Stacker’ a UK gentleman back in 2015 as a lucky YouTube community Giveaway prize. This was eleven years ago and silver stacking was still new to me, has time passed.

This High relief is amazing in the quality of strike compared to the original classic format. The field is like a polished mirror finish, concave rather than flat due to the minting material flow mechanics requirements to achieve the proper finish for a coin of this size. Characteristic of numismatic Proof quality coins is the cameo finish of the subjects, noted differences are the more defined textures, more distinct musculature of the horse revealing it’s health and strength that accompanies a horse’s ready speed while peacefully at rest.

From the accompanying Certificate of Authenticity the horse is the seventh creature of the 12 in the Chinese zodiac, so those individuals born under this sign tend to exhibit general characteristics of Hardworking, sociable, optimism and energetic. Off the Certificate and digging a little deeper with the ‘Fire element’ influence and thinking of it as a magnifier; a sense of independence, bold decision making, charismatic, somewhat impatient and as a women, potentially financially dangerous with a credit card. 😅

The lunar new year annual dinner usually gives me some opportunity to connect with my Asian side of the family tree, asking what few elders I have left any questions regarding our ethnic culture. Their absence this year has me going online for topics and cultural practices. And by sheer randomness I came across a video with the term, “Chinese Aunties.” This wasn’t the first time I’ve come across this term.

I was wondering what my natural Chinese counterparts in China are faring in the gold investment market. What form would Chinese women buy gold and silver as an investment? That subject ties in with a piece of gold jewellery that I have been having difficulty identifying, a Dragon and Phoenix gold bracelet as mentioned in that video. I will reveal my gold jewelry piece on my next post.

Physical precious metals bullion stacking is only a part of my personal overall financial strategy. Meanwhile, collecting numismatics have a different set of objectives and strategy. Unless you are a complete nutcase as I am please, do your research before deciding to buy into any bullion, jewelry or numismatic products.

It has lovely detail.
But this format on a 1 troy oz makes for a small image that didn't attract many buyers. High relief eventually took off on the 2 troy oz. size and larger coins/rounds. The thickness plays an important role to properly mint high relief products. Shadow Stacker got these for a sweet deal for the whole lot and makes a great example coin formats outside the typical size.
Thanks for the comment @coinjoe

You don't see many coins in this odd size, too odd apparently as the sellers had a hard time selling these Rolo styled proofs. The Perth mint discontinued this style not long after this one but continued with the bigger coins.
A cool piece I think.

Examining the Hallmarks, it's hard to see. I se a "99" that I guess was the year it was made. There are two sets of stamps I am still trying to figure who made this. Could be local, could be from Hong Kong. More digging, A.I. can't help me here. I may have to take it down to a Chinese jewelry shop in the old Chinatown.

That gif was one of a dozen video shots (2018), the only one with a decent smile. 😁

Thank you @erica005
It was good while it fitted especially for the Thrifted price of an authentic red and gold silk dress of this type. I never did find a Black silk version with a golden dragon. When I visit Hong Kong I may get one custom made.

Have a Happy New Year Sis!

I may pick up a 1/4 oz coin for variety even though I wasn't born on the Year of the Horse.
Silvergoldbull.ca do have Perth gold in the odd parity with Maple Leafs sale now and then.

i luv 5 the thickness of this one..

Small and chunky.
It has to be this thick to properly mint in high relief.
The small diameter turned off most Stackers as too odd.
High relief was more saleable on larger coins like the ten troy oz size and larger.
So when you look at large 5 or 10 oz. size coins and rounds, you will see clearly much better detail and quality than the standard 1 troy oz.

Thanks for commenting, and a closer look @chinito

The family decided it'd be at one of my favorite restaurants. It's on the expensive side but here is no doubt to its quality menu and good reputation. I got there early enough to found nearby parking. We picked the 18th rather than the 17th (It's the number 8). It was totally packed full diners even when we had a reservation guarantee.
I passed on the liquor and survived the culinary minefield.
It was worth the pain today, and why I am replying this late at night/morning.

Happy Lunar New Year!
Always, with Love 🤗🌺❤️

I will be donating it to a local Thrift shop where I found it. I hope the next gal enjoys it. If I visit Hong Kong I may get a custom tailored Black silk dress with a golden dragon.

It was lively noisy but no fore crackers, my sister can't stand fire crackers.
Great chatting time and eating like crazy. The cuisine was awesomely delicious as expected. 😋
Red envelopes and sweets were passed around.
I spent today recovering.

Happy Lunar New Year!

Passed on the drinks.
Barely survived the culinary minefield.
Spent the day paying for it in discomfort but worth it.
My son drove us home.
