1543 - 1993 Portugal 200 Escudo – Tanegashima

This is a fine coin shop find last June of 2023 and since @trumpman recently shared his Portuguese sailing ships Escudos and @dbooster’s fondness to Japanese silver, I figure it is a good time to share this lovely silver commemorative coin.

“Black birds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven.

The 1543 date clued me into thinking of James Clavell’s 1975 novel Shogun, a historical fiction novel set on feudal Japan in the late 1500s that became the 1980 TV Drama starring Richard Chamberlain. A new version of Shogun 2024 miniseries starring Anna Sawai is set to be released this month of February. I’m eager to see it.

However, that was not the same event when the Portuguese first landed on Tanegashima in 1543.

Reverse; Portuguese Ship, Coast of Japan, Pearl border, blossoms
Inscription 種子島 * TANEGASHIMA, INCM * 1543•1993 * E.BYRNE
Diameter 36mm, Thickness 2.8mm
Weight 26.5g, 0.925 Sterling Silver

The ship represented on this coin is a Carrack. Which can be also be often referred to as a Nao by the Spanish, or Nau by the Portuguese. These three masted ships were well suited to handle rough seas and carry a sizable cargo for its size, ideal for exploration and trade.

Tanegashima is an island of the Osumi Archipelago in the East China Sea with an area of 444 square kilometers under the Tanegashima clan. Today it's under Japan’s Kagoshima Prefecture.

The encounter was rather ordinary and peaceful as an unfamiliar ship drifted towards Tanegashima with men wearing strange clothes speaking an unfamiliar language. But like a link in the chain of history, this encounter had far reaching effects of Japanese history.

Edge; Reeded.

Among the initial goods traded by the Portuguese was the introduction of European firearms. It was then these match-lock argebus firearms were colloquially termed as ‘Tanegashima’ by the Japanese.
With the advantage of tremendous range over bow and ability to pierce armor this weapon was adopted and used by Samurai and by the rank in file Ashigaru. The firearm had some significant drawbacks; most glaring was the long time it took to muzzle load, prime and fire, the high cost to manufacture and manufacturing time. Another was that rain effected the ability to fire. Despite these issues the ‘Tanegashima’ gun changed the face of Japanese warfare.

Obverse; Portuguese Coat of Arms, Compass, Sea representation, Blossoms, Pearl border.
Inscription; REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA, 200 ESCUDOS.
Minted in Lisbon, Portugal by the Mint of Lisbon.

Other than guns, other goods from Europe are; tobacco, soaps, wool, and generally products not found in Japan and in return are products like Silk, Lacquer ware, swords and silver. Trade prospered until 1641 when the Portuguese where shunned in favor to the Dutch. Why? Well, that’s another story.

For now, I am pleased to find this lovely silver ship coin, too bad it has some milking but still a great add to the collection.☠️

I was in a display cabinet of a Richmond coin shop, a series of shelves that rotated on a lateral motorized carousel. There it was... under P for Portugal is this coin inside an old paper flip. Got a few other coins and made a deal for the bunch.
It's coin !LUV @geneeverett

I wasn't gonna let it get away without a little discount from the dealer and fair enough he did mark the price down a bit.
Happy with the deal @silvertop

It's a 35 to 40 minute drive to Mid Richmond when there's no road construction. Not Local enough so I have to make good my time, 9 times out of 10, there's road construction.

That's not too far away, I don't think I've ever been to Richmond.....
Bellingham is probably about the same distance for us to go to our local coin shop. It's run by good people that we have established a relationship with over the years!😀
Still premiums are going up Lol!!

I may give it a try again to see if the inLeo.io front end have improved it's interface. I left it back in November because the quirks, work-arounds, and constant scrolling/clicking had aggravated the discomfort of my right hand. It was not worth the added literal neurological pain. I have atypical Parkinson in my right hand and arm which has limited mobility, at the time the inLeo.io front end layout and issues was not ergonomically conducive to my condition. I will set aside a test post see if it has improved sufficient to resume publishing.

Like Silversaver888, I like to keep my Long-Termed and Emergency savings in gold, silver and Crypto. Being financially minded I am disciplined in keeping my expenses down without denying the needs of my young sons. I invested in passive side incomes, and expanded my skills adding value to my employer. My home is now Mortgage free giving me a great feeling of personal accomplishment and security. Every silver or gold coin I get is a testament to that and, I hope every woman can accomplish this.
Thanks @ashiru

I think it is always good to study what was written or printed on a coin and even what inspired it
I love the explanation you gave us here

I enjoy doing the research behind what the coin represents.
Often it portrays economic history represented by an event.
There wasn't a lot of information to go on. I could not even find the name of that Portuguese ship. There was also a claim that it wasn't a Portuguese ship but a Chinese Junk that ferried three Portuguese Catholic priests over to Japan from China. You can draw your own conclusions from the 16th century Nanban art panel.
Fun to discover @rafzat

Black nails look dirty. Not always slimming. Black cholera was not popular either. Cannot make everyone happy with their looks. Even if you claim you are as white as Darcula. When you work with elderly customers , you could scare them off like a scareraven.
Those are statements that would be quite offensive to make. Why was I thinking about it after reading your post?
Moments of self-reflections about our reaction to others are also very nurturing. Just seing those elderly ladies you help discovering your treasures chests and reading about histories of your maany achievements dressed in black clothes following you like a smell of you share here? What perfume do you use? Poison by Dior? Veery heavy scent of defeat. I used to buy Green one. But you really cannot wear them. Overwhelming to trots.

I'm not really allowed to wear nail polish or have perfume on while on duty as stated in the employee guide lines.
After more than 20 years of Nursing work and hand washing my hands at least 40 to 50 times a shift it is impossible to maintain the nail polish. I seldom use a scent anyway.
And ever since the Covid panic staff are to resume wearing standard scrubs and lab coats as recommended by the Safety Manager.
Say, what do you do for a living @aneczka ?

1453 AD is a long time ago, the ship itself may barely be 75 feet and not very large. I can't find the name of the ship or the name of the Captain or crew but it is a remarkable feat to travel that far and discovering a unique culture. A credit to the courage and skill of the crew.

There is not a lot of information of this event. I couldn't even find surviving crew and cargo manifests or the name of the ship either, perhaps the records have not survived all these years except what is preserved on old Nanban art panels.

This coin is a nice in-between Portugal and Japan, now the trick is to find a reciprocal Japanese coin that commemorates the arrival of the Portuguese should it exists.

There was not a lot of information on this event as I get the feeling any of the original records of the Crew or even the name of the ship did not survive to this day. At least it was documented on a few 16th century Japanese paintings.
Thanks for coming aboard again @luisdey

After my first year of setting aside a few silver maple leaf coins per month as savings, It got boringly routine. When I was little I used to play pirate fun with the neighbor's kids for chocolate coins. Great memories, hence my theme. I happened to spot this coin on a semi-annual coin shop expedition, it was silver from the Krause designation of 665a. It has a little milky issue but that gave me a discount off the price tag.
A fine addition to the fleet.
Thanks @ladyrainbow

Yeah maple leaves do get boring, why I have a good deal of cheaply found collectible types too even if some cost a bit more. I know milk spots should matter but most older tokens have something. Like you said, good time for a discount!

Good you are keeping a child-like nature to play around with collecting. It's what it's all about. Chocolate coins is still a valuable pirate commodity...and keyword...coin 😆 As a kid I thought they were really wrapped in gold.

I love how you always write a little bit of history as well, I didn't pay much attention during history classes at school as I found it boring and almost started to yawn instantly, lol. Now that I'm older I find that I missed out on a lot of interesting stuff, so tons of these stories are completely new to me.

I love reading these things, so thanks for sharing this coin and the bit of history along with it!

There wasn't really much to go on history-wise from the Portuguese side, what history was more from the Japanese side with the Nanban art has documented. I have yet to find the name of the Ship or record of the ship's manifest. I have to assume such records have been long destroyed.

In hindsight, I could have added a new 'Chronicles of the Bloody Raven' chapter of, "The Karasu." Assassin.
