12 Days of Christmas; 1 Troy oz. SS Tilawa Shipwreack Voyage Silver Round

(Edited)

Last year's 12 Days of Christmas seemed like only yesterday. It was personally a rough year but as I look back there were challenges to work out, new experiences and blessings that helped me get past most of the pain.

“Black birds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven

The annual 12 Days of Christmas #sgs initiative is back with a vengeance! Perhaps that’s not the right word… Back by popular demand! No, that’s not it either. Back by #sgs tradition and in keeping with the spirit of the Secret Santa initiative. I’m going throw in a few posts, time and energy permitting, and give my Secret Santa some good options.

@silverd510’s link is here. There's no need for an invitation, just jump right on in.

The silver ship.

For my first silver on my wish list... and still reasonably priced...

Some of you may remember the S.S. Gairsppa a British Merchant ship that was sunk by a German U Boat in February 1941. The S.S. Tilawa met the same fate only that she had aboard 732 civilian passengers accompanied by 222 crew and 4 gunners. She had 6,000 tons of cargo and among that cargo was 60 tons of bullion silver destined for the South African mint.

This stern view of the SS Tilawa is a little foreboding as if this ship was being observed at periscope level prior to being struck by two Japanese torpedoes. She sank at about 930 miles northeast of the Seychelles, the date was November 23, 1942 and 280 souls perished that day. 678 survivors were rescued by the SS Carthage and the HMS Birmingham.

Commissioned in 1924, the SS Tilawa is primarily a 10,000 GRT Passenger ship charged to accommodate as many as 2390 passengers and transport goods and mail between ports along the Indian coast and east coast of Africa under the British India Steam Navigation Company.

There is a dedicated website documenting the entire history of this tragedy including the controversial recovery and legal ownership of the silver bullion.

There are several versions of this product in addition to the 1 Troy Oz round; there are the 1/4 oz., 1/2 oz., 10 Troy Oz. Bar, 1 Kilo Bar, 100 Troy oz. Bar plus a 'Wreckage' version of the rounds according to silver.com's website.

I'm still working on the new list.

There are six items left from the 2023 Wish list that haven't changed. Those links are listed further down this post if you're curious or don't remember. I'll just come up with a few more to round out the complete Wish list.

Physical precious metals bullion stacking is only a part of my personal overall financial strategy. Numismatics has a different set of objectives than Stacking. Please, do your research before deciding to buy any bullion products.

Not yet. for Collectables I have a different strategy than generic and legal tender. I should draw up a flow chart, after years of stacking the simple plan I started with gradually became more complex depending on circumstances and opportunity. If there is a certain order of sale it would first be generic, followed by legal tender then finally collectables that take longer to liquidate.
My cash flow is good, solid balance sheet, and very little debt so I can afford to get an occasioned collectable.

This is a part of a community gift exchange in progress called Secret Santa. Another member has drawn my name. And just like others, we put out our Christmas wish list coins we like to get in the mail.
I have drawn a member's name but that member has yet to give me a clue what is on a coin they would like.

Shipwrecks with tons of Silver …😳
That’s a story that would have any “Stacker” sitting on the edge of their chair listening to every word!😇
“Santa, that’s the Silver I want for Christmas!”🤗

"Pssst, Santa, are you gonna tell the authorities that you found a shipwreck full of gold and silver?"
Then he will tell the story of how the Elves designed a special deep sea submersible that is specially designed for complex deep sea salvage operations. The Tender ship 'Rudolph' is also a marvel of engineering and technological with advance tactical and telemetry but also invisible to satellite and radar. "We're in, pick up the goods and out before anyone's the wiser." Say Captain Saint Nick.
He'll know if you've been bad or good.

Beautiful silver commemorating the loss of those vessels. A reminder of just how bad WW II really was...

That would have been fun to find all of that silver on the bottom of the sea! Nothing like recovered sunken treasure. I've never found any but I still want to go look for some more!

Websites like SSTiawa1942 do put a face rather than a number on the victims of war.

I think drone and robot technology is much more advanced than we think. Every ship lost become fair game to be re-discovered and may be plundered for their lost treasures as we speak.

There may be a literal race to strip mine the wealth of minerals laying in the bottom of the oceans. What could be happening soon would have every ecologist and naturalist lighting their hair on fire demanding the ocean floor be set aside as nature preserves.
I can see that happening.

Exactly Sis.
No retailer has this imported into Canada. SS means 'Shipwrecked Silver'

SS Gairsoppa
SS Tiawa
SS Japan

See, it fits perfectly with my other shipwreck silver so that is why I put this out first. It's almost poetic too.

Always, with !LUV 🤗🌺❤️

That's why I put this out first as Day 1.
It's silver, a ship, unique history, inexpensive, still available in quantity in the USA but not in Canada.
