Reviving the value of Naira from the History Books.

I've mentioned a bunch of time that I'm a history buff and even as I'm writing this, my latest sneak peek into historical events is about the phenomenal warring era in Gorguyeo (currently, Korea). This is a moment that was punctuated by the war between the Khitans and Gorguyeo.

I like to enlighten myself about history because I know there's so much information embedded in the history page of different race and I've noticed how the things that played out in history are not so different from what's happening in this day and time. While digging into history, it will become easier to appreciate some of the things that we are living with in this day and time.

Take the medical institution for an example; The medical institution has evolved massively and we've moved up to the point where "organ transplant" operations no longer sound like an impossible task to be performed. Hundreds of years ago, folks lost their life to smallpox because of poor healthcare.

The advancement in technology is another part of what will always be appreciated about this modern world in comparison to how things were hundreds of years ago.

While there is so much win to celebrate about the things we are outgrowing through history and the things that are currently fitted into our lifestyle in this modern world, there are also some historical elements which would have been a perfect fit in this modern era.

Imagine how life would have been if the money we are spending now had the same worth like it was in 1924...

1924 is just a hundred years ago. Yet, the value would have been mind-blowing. Well, just to be sure that we are being historically accurate, Naira (Nigeria's currency) was introduced in Nigeria at some point in 1973 with a fixed rate of €1 = ₦2. That was just 50 years ago. How Nigeria's currency moved from that value to being valued around €1 = ₦1000+ in this modern day is both devasting and sad in equal proportion.

When I came across one of the prompt in this list of prompts and a question was raised about something we would like to bring back from the history books, my mind immediately went to the value of Nigerian currency. A lot of hardship I've been seeing in Nigeria since recent years has so much to do with the value of our currency. Nigeria already has so much to be bitter about but the buying power of our currency is an utter disgrace.

There are times when I will think back to the purchasing power of our currency when I was still a kid. Just a decade ago, anyone that has ₦1000 could use that to cook a pot of soup for a family of 7 and the meal will tick all the quality box you can think. Now, #1000 isn't even enough to buy a bottle of red oil.

I can still recall when we were still growing up, our yearly house rent was not up to ₦50,000. This was the same house where my parents were able to raise 5 kids. Now, the tiny selfcon apartment I'm staying in costs an insane amount. I was even looking at the cost of buying land and the price is mind-blowing.

So, if I really have the power to mess with the present and the past, I will do a partial reset of the monetary system. That way, folks would be able to earn the wages of this modern era while the purchasing power of whatever they are earning would be as high as it was decades ago.

That's just a snippet of what I would like to bring back from the historical books to this modern era.

Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop or Comma.

I concur and concur over and over again. The buying power of Nigeria's currency now will make my ancestors turn in their graves.

My dad once told me that there was a time in Nigeria when dollar was not appreciated because naira had more value than it. He also told me that he would be given #1 note and that was enough for him for the whole day but now even #1000 can't pay for two square meals..so sad

Seriously oooo. Our currency is taking "April Fool" too seriously. We are already in an era where 100k won't be enough to buy a huge amount of foodstuffs. Not when bag of Rice costs a fortune and the same goes for every other thing.

Many families are struggling because of this and employers have decided to never give a decent salary increment to their workers

🤣🤣🤣 April fool's 🤣🤣🤣

So many families have broken apart because of sustenance. Husband will leave the house and not return because he does not know how to care for his family and that is basically on feeding.

The currency should better go back to normal o and soon too

It is indeed very sad and devastating how the value of the Naira just keeps depreciating.

True. Naira is losing so much value and the effect of that is hitting us hard in this part of the world

The way Naira has lost its value is disheartening. If only things would just go back to the way they were before.

Exactly. The current value of Naira is ridiculously depressing. At the moment, people are earning Peanuts yet expenses are piling up. It's insane

Deflation is really affecting the value of the Nigeria currency but i am quite optimistic about the value of naira

I wish to share in that optimism. Things will be so much better for us if the purchasing power of Naira becomes fairly decent while price of goods gets reduced in the same manner
