How I avoid sinking my Finances during December Holiday.
I enjoy the December holiday season and I've celebrated it in so many ways, year after year, from birth till this very moment. Like, it's a season in the year when almost everyone in Nigeria pauses from the hustle and bustle of life to spend quality time doing whatever makes sense to them as a good way to celebrate the season.
There are so many things people do to enjoy this season; travelling, hanging out with family and friends, buying gifts for folks, giving themselves a good treat, eating expensive meals, etc. All these cluster together and each of them is typically edged towards enjoying oneself, doing fun stuff, and relaxing. This is why I see the December holiday season as a period in a year that's unbelievably looked forward to by many people.
We all love that enjoyment. But, it's also very annoying that this holiday season is a moment when the cost of goods and services fly through the roof.
Yeah!
Lemme tell you something; the market in my part of the world is driven by several factors and one of them is the behavior of our native currency in exchange for Dollar. You can buy 1kg of Milk today for #2500 and meet it at #3000 a week later. Everyone says it's like that people Naira is losing the forex drama against the dollar.
The same thing occurs whenever the December holiday is around the corner. Every December, the price of everything ridiculously gets inflated by merchants. Even service providers do the same and you will always hear a nonchalant "this is Christmas season" if you attempt to dig around and know what the hell is causing the price hike.
I've lived in this Country for too long to be naively optimistic about people. I know things will always go up during festive seasons. Now, the big question is;
How do I save myself from overspending in this festive season? Is that even possible?
First, I have to continuously remind myself to never incur debt for any reason. I've experienced what it means to be a debtor during my Uni days and I've never been financially indebted to anyone since then till this very moment. If I want something and I know I can't afford it at that exact moment, I look the other way. It's as simple as that.
If you are in a country like mine where the December holiday is celebrated to the core, you will know that there is no shortage of things that will look appealing to you during this season. Don't break the bank for every shiny stuff out there.
Secondly, I'm buying the stuff I need in bulk. Again, this isn't just a festive period lifestyle. It's a way of life that has become a habit for me and I do it continuously because it helps me be in more control of my finances. For example, I'm someone who eats rice a lot and the price of rice is hitting an all-time high every week. I know it will be worse during the festive season and I've already found a way to walk around that.
I already bought rice in huge quantity and I even bought a bag of rice for my family when I went to see them last month. Rice and a few other food items especially the ones that are not perishable wouldn't be a problem for me or my family until February of 2024. Getting stuff in bulk is a tested and trusted way that can be explored by anyone who doesn't wants to overspend during this festive season.
Last though not least, one of the things I just have to do regardless of the enjoyment of this festive season is to make sure my earnings won't be pushed down to $0. Thankfully, most of my income is generated from the things I do remotely. I'm not yet sure of how work will be this festive season, but I will still be grinding and I won't be mad if I earn just 50% of what I usually earn.
That's my hot take. Feel free to share yours in the comment section. I'm sure we all have things we are doing to make sure we won't enter 2024 in a knackered financial position.

Buying goods in bulk pays a lot. It's a habit I cultivated from my Mom and it has been helpful. So to avoid indebtedness, one should also learn how to cut ones expenses. Have a wonderful holiday!
Yeah. It almost feels like we have the same learning curve. Haha. I also grew up in a home where my Mum like to get things in bulk. My Dad is also like that and I've learned so much from them.
Kudos to our respective parents for instilling good morals in us. I pray we would be able to replicate the same to our children
We need to have a backup supply of money to not to fall into debt and if making debts become a habit, thats very bad to have from the early days of life's point of view.
Remote earning is getting a good grip for us, because such financial systems are providing enough opportunities to both learn and earn. I think it helps you too.
But, in the end the finance management is what matters most, we can adjust in most circumstances.
You are spot-on. Having an additional supply of money is very important. Like, people need to start improving their earnings and multiple streams of income has proven to be very important in achieving this.
Working remotely is also cool. It has proven to be very essential especially when you can earn in a stronger currency which can give you leverage over inflationary pressure.
Prizes are extremely high right now and unlike other Christmas days this one is kinda messy due to all the drama and hassle about dollar rate and all. I just got back from a store where I usually buy bottle coke and the new price is twice the previous amount and not only that, but you still have to buy another drink to be able to buy one crate of coke.
It’s best to be very watchful about our expenses nowadays else we’ll end up in a financial bondage and this doesn’t just apply to festive period.
You are correct about that. We already know that the price of things usually get crazy during festive seasons. But, like you said, the recurring forex drama that our currency is having in comparison to dollar makes things even worse.
We have to be strategic about our expenses this December. We also need to remember that 2024 will likely come with its drama.

For sure it is a wise thing to plan this festive period well. People believe January is very long , it's not so long, only that the salary will be long to get. In December, depending on where you work, you get 13th salary, Xmas bonus, and all that. It will be wise to plan and then save some so as not to be too broke before next salary..
Where is your house? Come and drop the rice here in my house, let me help to be cooking it for you. Hahahaha. Things are really increasing daily, we just need to stock up the house if the means is there
Lol... You are calmly dropping legit Financial Advice from here on. This is awesome 😂😂.
As for the rice, it's been very helpful and I'm sure I won't have to buy another rice until January or February. Haha.
Happy Holiday in advance oooo. You need to rest well. You've achieved so much this year already.

You really have nice tactics to spending less during the festive season. Getting things we need in bulk just before the season drama unveils is the goal. Many things out there which are shiny can be enticing this, sticking to our budget remains very vital..I don't want to imagine incurring debt all because of Christmas celebration. We will enjoy and be happy but within our financial limits
Yes ooo. Getting into debt because of the Christmas Celebration doesn't tick as a good idea. We can always find ways to celebrate it within what we can afford and we can still be very happy while doing that.
Some forget that we have a whole year coming after Christmas. That's why they spend Christmas as if that's the end of time. Haha.

You have a great strategy to remain prudent through the festive season, buying things in bulk is such a good idea.
I am always an awesome #dreemerforlife.
Yeah. It works all the time and it's a strategy that can also be explored even when there is no ongoing festival or holiday.

Incuring debt is never a way to start nor end the month. And you did right by yourself and your family getting the needed goods in stock. That's a nice way to go.
Hello dearest fashionable dreemer. Happy Thursday 😊. It is pypt day, but unlike others, today is special. There'll be lots of guests, typing, and sweet melodies voices to fill us in today. I hope you'll be among them. I waltzed in from #dreemport, for I am an amazing #dreemer. An awesomely made #dreemerforlife.
Yeah. Being indebted because of a desire to have a high-profile Christmas celebration doesn't sound like a good idea. It isn't something I would like to do. I would rather work with stuff that are within my budget
That's a way to go Kene. Keep up the good work, Sir😊.

You have a better plan for this season, it is better for people who work remotely, salary earners in Nigeria can not make s full list of Christmas in this season like the previous years. #dreemerforlife
That's true. Working remotely comes with a lot of juicy advantages. Also, earning in foreign currency makes this fairly easier.

The way things increasr in price during Christmas gives me concern. There was a year I and my brother wanted to get a t-shirt during Christmas season, we asked for the price and they told us, but our money was not complete so we left and came back the following day only to discover that everything has increased in price, we had to just let go
It's wise to spend with caution during this season. I don't also like debt,it takes one's peace away.
I love your strategies they are nice, they say a word is enough for the wise. As for me, I have already, pen down many points from this post and I am not going to take them for granted, @emrysjobber said, most of us are trying to be stingy this Christmas. Hope you are not planning to be part of us🤣🤣
#dreemerforlife #dreemport
It's really interesting how the price of things spikes up every now and then. You can't easily budget something at a price and still expect it to be at that price the next time you go back for that same thing.
Getting things in bulk is just the best, most people see people that buy things in bulk as rich people but the truth is, that is just the best anyways.
I dropped by from dreemport
That's true. When drawing a budget, I try to inflate the price so I will be able to cover any slippage that might have been caused by inflationary pressure.
We all do what we can to make things work well for all of us. Hehe
That's really wise, inflating the price so you don't get caught unaware, hehe.
Yes we will and I think you are good to go
