My Generous Mother: A Legacy of Compassion
Happy Sunday Hivers!
I remember when I was just a kid, there was an elderly person who would come to our house to ask help from my mother. We really suffered from poverty when I was young, but despite how hard life was, my mother still did her best to help others who were struggling too.
As we grew up, we witnessed with our own eyes how generous our mother was. Whenever blessings came our way, she would always share them with our neighbors. She would always say, ‘At least they can experience it too.’ That’s where we learned our own sense of generosity, from our mother.

I’ve shared in my previous blogs that my mother is no longer as strong as she used to be, now that she’s already 70 years old. She walks slowly and gets tired easily, but despite that, she still remains quick to help and give to those in need. Her heart for others never changed.
Most of you already know that the Philippines was hit by a typhoon during the first week of November. Because it was a strong one, many people lost their homes and their livelihoods were affected. Since our family was fortunate enough to be safe, we decided to organize another outreach program to extend help to others. But with the number of people affected, our personal funds were not enough, so my sister and her husband, who are in Australia, organized a donation drive for the typhoon victims in Leyte, since my mother is from Leyte. By God’s grace, many people responded to the donation drive.

So when we received the money, our mother personally helped in purchasing all the goods to be distributed. She never agrees to stay behind, she insists on going with us. She’s even the one who keeps reminding us and pushing us to schedule the outreach as soon as possible. That’s how active she still is when it comes to helping others. Even when her knees ache and walking becomes difficult, she still pushes herself to go.

After we finished purchasing the goods, she also helped with repacking. You really can’t refuse her help, she finds so much joy in being able to assist others. She doesn’t even mind her aching knees, as long as the assistance reaches those who need it and people have something to eat. That’s how generous my mother is.

That’s why we siblings, having grown up this way, have become accustomed to helping those in need. She always reminds us that it doesn’t matter whether what you give is big or small,as long as your help comes from the heart. The values and virtues we see and learn from our parents are what we tend to follow the most.
Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!
