A Refreshing Afternoon Walk
Happy Monday Hivers!
I keep mentioning here that my 70-year-old mother is no longer as strong as she was in her younger years. In fact, we hired someone to clean the house and do the laundry since she mostly lives alone while we’re in Cebu. But even if she moves a bit slower now, it doesn’t mean she no longer walks. She still goes for walks to keep herself active.

While I was still in Leyte, I was her constant walking companion. The last time we walked together, I mentioned that I wanted to explore the mountain areas near our place, and she said she was interested in joining me. The first thing I asked her was, ‘Can you handle it?’ She happily replied, ‘I still can, but we won’t walk fast.’ Of course, I immediately agreed.

The laat time we walked, I saw an open gate with a pathway, and I initially thought the whole area was private property. But my mom told me it wasn’t, so I suggested that we explore it. She said she had been there before because that’s where Casili used to be, an establishment that exported eel. She mentioned that the owner was Korean, but it’s no longer operating now, so we decided to go and check it.

On our way to the Casili area, we passed by a place where pigs and chickens were being raised. It was actually the perfect spot for raising animals since no one would be disturbed by the smell of the waste.

The place was full of serenity. The only things you could hear were the chirping of the birds and the sound of the leaves dancing with the wind.

This is Casili. They closed down during the pandemic, and I don’t know if they were able to recover their investment. The place used to be full of eels and bustling with people, but now it’s abandoned, extremely quiet, and nature has taken over, letting plants grow freely all around.

This is the aquarium. It used to be full of eels swimming around, but now there aren’t any left, and it’s just abandoned.

We checked what was ahead of Casili and saw a trail, so we decided to continue walking. I really appreciated the view, the trees were tall. The beauty of nature was truly amazing.

My mom remembered that this trail leads to the well-known Bontoc Cave in our area. By the time we reached it, we were already at the foot of Bontoc Mountain. While walking, my mom kept thinking that there might be wild monkeys nearby since we were close to the cave. We actually wanted to continue further, but my mom was worried because wild monkeys can be aggressive, and she couldn’t guarantee our safety.

So instead of continuing, we decided to turn back along the same path. I agreed with my mom since it was risky, especially with just the two of us and no one else around to help.

Walking under the trees and being surrounded by nature feels completely different. You can really feel yourself recharging from the stresses of life. Honestly, I truly enjoyed our walks with my mom, just being out there in nature.

Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!
