Think software Updates Are Useless? Think Again.
So there’s this one thing I’ve noticed about a lot of people—including myself—and it’s how we tend to overlook something pretty important when it comes to using our phones: updating the software to the latest version . Yep, you’d be surprised how many of us just ignore that “software update available” notification like it’s not even there. I used to be in that category too—until something happened recently.
My phone had been asking for an update for a while, but I kept ignoring it. I was home then, and honestly, I didn’t want to “waste” my mobile data on something that didn’t seem urgent. I just thought, “Well, the phone is still working, right? What’s the big deal?” So I left it.
But during that period, I started noticing some weird things. My phone was acting up. Apps were taking longer than usual to open. It would lag a lot, and sometimes even freeze randomly. I thought maybe it was because my storage was almost full—I mean, I had a bunch of photos, videos, and apps I hadn’t used in months. So I tried clearing some space, hoping that would fix things. Spoiler alert: it didn’t.
Fast forward to when I resumed school. Luckily for us, there’s a school Wi-Fi that's pretty strong, and the router is actually close to my hostel. One evening, I was just relaxing in bed, scrolling through my phone when the update notification popped up again. I thought, “Let me just do it now, jare.” I didn’t even think too much about it, I just started the update since I wasn’t using my data.
The thing is, the Wi-Fi can be kind of slow in the evening because a lot of people are online. So, at some point, the download kept pausing. But I remembered that the Wi-Fi usually works better around midnight when most people are asleep. So I just left it and continued the download later that night.
Eventually, the update finished downloading, and I installed it. I didn’t expect much, to be honest. But not long after, I noticed a difference—my phone became way faster and smoother. Apps opened quickly, no more annoying lags, and the overall performance was just better. That’s when i realised that the update actually made a real difference.
Now, I’m definitely not ignoring updates again. Sometimes, we think they’re unnecessary or just a waste of data, but in reality, they can solve problems we didn’t even know were related to outdated software.
So yeah, if your phone’s been bugging you about an update—don’t ignore it like I did. It might just be what your phone needs to get back in shape.

I didn't think this was still a thing these days. Surely, updates tend to fix things. But to have your OS perform poorly for so long, irredeemably as you described, makes me curious which UI you're running on. Other users must have also experienced it. Good thing the update fixed it.
I am actually using an android operating system.
