The Subject That Shaped My Future: My Love for Animal Husbandry

Looking back at my time in secondary school, I had quite a number of subjects that caught my attention, especially during my junior years. Subjects like Basic Science, Agricultural Science, and even Social Studies stood out to me. Not just because of the topics, but also because of the teachers. You know how some teachers just have this way of making you feel connected to a subject? That was the case for me. Some of them explained things in such a clear and engaging way that even the most boring topic would become interesting. But as much as I enjoyed those subjects, everything changed when I moved into senior secondary school.

In SS1, i was in the science class, and as usual, we had some compulsory courses like biology, physics, and chemistry but then we were told to choose between some other subjects that involved Animal Husbandry, clothing and textiles, cathering as well as carpentry. That was the moment I had to sit down and really ask myself, “What exactly do I love? What do I see myself doing in the future?” It didn’t take me long to decide. I chose Animal Husbandry.

From the very first day I stepped into that class, I knew I had made the right decision. There was just something about learning about animals—their feeding, breeding, management, and even their diseases—that sparked something in me. It wasn’t just a subject I had to pass; it became something I genuinely looked forward to every day.

What made it even more special was the fact that I never scored below an “A” in that subject throughout my senior secondary school. It wasn’t because I was trying to impress anyone or be the best in class, but because I was genuinely in love with the subject. I would read about animal breeds, management systems, feeding patterns, and disease control like it was a novel.

Choosing Animal Husbandry didn’t just help me in school—it shaped the direction of my life. It played a major role in the course I’m currently studying in the university, which is animal science. Everything I learned back then laid the foundation for what I’m doing now. Sometimes, during lectures or practicals, I find myself remembering things I was taught in secondary school, and surprisingly, those same lessons still apply. It’s a beautiful feeling knowing that a decision I made back then is still positively affecting me today.

Honestly, I’ve never for once regretted choosing Animal Husbandry. In fact, if I had the chance to go back in time and choose all over again, I’d still pick Animal Husbandry without even thinking twice. That subject wasn’t just my favourite in secondary school—it was the part of the journey into becoming the agriculturist I am today, and i am grateful for that.

Thanks for reading.

I knew you would write about this subject knowing how much you loved it even as a child and how you went ahead to achieve your dream. I’m happy for you.
