The Risk That Made Me Think Twice About My Finances.

If I’m being honest, the most recent risk I took had to do with money. I have never really been the type to save. Like, I’m the kind of person that once money enters into his account, it is going to finish in due time. I don’t even spend on anything serious—just small, small things here and there that don’t really matter in the long run. Before I know it, everything is gone, and when I look back, I can’t even account for how I spent it and i normally complain of not having any money left on me.

So last week, I was just by myself, reflecting on a lot of things, and then i realised I didn’t even have any savings to my name. I looked at my situation and started thinking, “What if an emergency comes up? What if I need to sort something out urgently?” And it hurt. It hurt to know that i have had a lot of money pass through my hands, but nothing to show for it—not even a thousand naira saved somewhere. So i knew i had to make a decision.

I didn’t want to keep living like that. I felt like I was just moving in circles financially. So I decided to take a bold step—something I hadn’t done before. I told myself that no matter what, I would start saving. Even if it’s not much, at least something. I set a small goal: I’ll be saving less than ₦10,000 or even more every month. It might not be a lot to some people, but for me, it’s a big deal, and at least i would have something saved somewhere for the rainy days.

Now, I’ve always heard of apps like PiggyVest. People talk about how you can save money there and even get some interest in the end. Infact,i saw a post somewhere on twitter were someone said they made over a million naira interest from saving their money for a whole year on the app. But then I was still sceptical. You know how these online platforms can be—one day they’re here, the next, they’re gone. I didn’t want to fall victim to some scam and end up losing the little I managed to put aside. So I held back.

But then I spoke to a friend of mine who is really into this whole money management thing. He advised me to try Cowrywise instead. According to him, they offer even better interest rates compared to PiggyVest, and the app is safe and reliable. I did my own small research, read reviews, and the platform looked legit. That’s how I finally gathered the courage to download Cowrywise and start using it for savings as well as a way to get more money from receiving interests.

I have made my first deposit, and honestly, It felt like I was finally doing something different with my life—something that could benefit me in the long run. I know it’s still early, and I can’t say it has paid off yet, but then I’m hopeful. I see this whole journey as a risk—especially because it’s something new for me—but then I genuinely hope it would pay off in the end. If it does, maybe someday I’ll look back and just be proud that I took this first step toward financial discipline.

Thanks for reading.
