The Craziest Thing I Did as a Teenager? Falling for an Instagram Scam

I’ve done a fair share of crazy things as a teenager, but looking back, there’s one moment that stands out—and it actually cost me some money.

It all started during a time when i was given some cash by my senior brother. I wasn’t exactly rolling in it, but I was curious about ways to multiply what I had. You know how it is when you’re young—you want to make quick money, and the idea of doubling your funds sounds too good to ignore. So, like any teenager looking for a shortcut, I started looking online.

One day, while scrolling through Instagram, I came across a page that looked like a business. It had that professional vibe—logos, well-designed posts, and people leaving what seemed like legit testimonies about how they doubled their money. It seemed very genuine, and the page was constantly posting new winners who’d received their payouts. I thought, This is it. This is my chance to turn this small amount of money into something bigger.

I decided to take the plunge. I messaged them privately, and to my surprise, they replied almost immediately. They were friendly and convincing, assuring me that if I sent a specific amount, I’d receive double back in a short time. I didn't even hesitate. They gave me an account number, and without thinking much about it, I transferred the money. I was already planning what I’d do with the doubled cash.

But then, things took a turn. I waited. And waited. I checked my account to see if the money was doubled as promised, but nothing happened. I messaged them again. No reply. I waited longer, growing increasingly frustrated. Then, I started to feel something in the pit of my stomach—the sinking feeling of this isn’t right.

Eventually, the page disappeared. Just like that. I couldn’t find it anymore. During that period, panic set in. I revisited the conversation and tried to reach out one last time. I even typed, "For the sake of God, please send my money back." That was the moment I realized they had already blocked me. They had taken my money and vanished into thin air.

I sat there, staring at my screen, completely stunned. I’d been scammed—and not just by anyone, but by someone who had built a whole facade of trust. I was pained, angry, and honestly, just really disappointed in myself for falling for such a trick. I’d spent my hard-earned money without questioning it, driven by the promise of something I should’ve known was too good to be true.

Looking back, I can’t believe I let myself get caught up in that. It wasn’t just about the money. It was the realization that I had been too hasty and trusting. The experience left me feeling foolish, but it also taught me some valuable lessons. Now, I’m way more sceptical about online deals and have become much more cautious when it comes to financial decisions.

That moment remains one of the craziest things I did as a teenager. It’s a reminder that not everything that looks good on the surface is what it seems—and, sometimes, a little patience and research could have saved me from a costly lesson.

You acted impulsively to double your money - many could fall for this trap - so you as a teenager could be forgiven. It is a horrible feeling realising that you have been scammed. You learnt a tough lesson but now you know how the world can be.
