Leaving to Become

Cover

🌱 Sometimes growth means walking away, not because you are proud, don't love your family, or hard-hearted but because you love who you're becoming.

I believe this is a topic every young adult should pay attention to.

You might not read to the end of my post, but a key takeaway is that "your growth is more important than anything."

If you know what you want and what's best for you, do it even if it means having to let your families go temporarily.

The Tough Decision

I made a tough decision, but I'm glad I took it about two years ago. I left my parents' house.

I'm someone that loves to learn and with a lot of potential; I know it. But I was constantly falling into depression because I saw that I wasn't reaching the level I know I could attain.

In the year 2020, that was the hustling phase, and also the time my emotions and mental health were shaky.

I lacked a lot of resources, from power supply to access to the Internet; it was tiring. But I didn't give up and was open to keep learning and investing in myself.

I learned how to code JavaScript, learned digital marketing, and took lots of courses I didn't think I would even use.

I was adamant that I even learned the basics of trading and candlestick patterns and wanted to invest in crypto but needed little capital to start. I didn't have that, and my parents dismissed the idea because of fear, and I wouldn't blame them since it was something they were unfamiliar with.

My parents were supportive in many ways, but our perspectives didn't always align. My Nigerian audience should be familiar with our African parents na, LOL. If you mention crypto, they would be scared and be thinking you are doing something illegal or if you say you want to search for a remote job instead, they might think you're a yahoo boy.

They are more focused on getting a degree, finding a job and following set rules but I was driven by curiosity and growth. They were worried that I might make mistakes, and I understood, that's what love does; it tries to protect you from the unknown.

Still, I knew I needed to experience things firsthand.

I understood at a young age that your environment is a huge factor in the rate of your growth.

I saw that my progress was slow, and I made the decision to leave my family. I was broke and unsure, but I had faith that I would figure it all out.

What I Learned

Leaving didn't mean I stopped loving my parents; it just meant I wanted to become the best version of myself. I needed to be my own man, grow and learn. I did learn and grow, in a short span after leaving home, I was able to finish courses earlier, get a few gigs, improve my chess and widen my network. Tbh. I felt more alive.

Conclusion

Learn to do what's best for you.

My parents loved me and were scared I would make wrong decisions out of a place of love, but I knew what I wanted and knew I could do it, so I walked away.

There were many more things my parents disagreed with, but I ended up still doing them, and over the years, they have respected and trusted me because they see I make good decisions for myself.

One thing grabbed from what you wrote Is never you settle out with your family, everyone has a long way to go and the truth is that there wouldn't be there always to represent you. Well done 👍

Yes, there are certain points you would want to leave for a better place especially when the place your family is is trying to limit your growth and potential, at that moment, leaving doesn’t mean cutting off from them but because you needed somewhere that would give you what you want while still getting in touch with them as often as you want.
