Worldcoin Ordered by German Watchdog to Delete Data Gathered Illegally

The Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision has ordered Worldcoin to erase data collected illegally, particularly sensitive biometric information from users.

Ongoing since November 2022, this investigation highlights concerns over compliance by Worldcoin with EU data protection laws, especially regarding the collection and storage of iris scans with adequate consent.

Due to similar concerns, Worldcoin's operations have also been banned by other European regulators, including as those in Spain and Portugal, raising concerns about user privacy and data security.

The data collection practices by Worldcoin raise significant implications for users, primarily concerning privacy and consent. The collection of biometric data, particularly iris scans has been under the fire for lacking transparency and informed consent.

Users may not completely understand how their sensitive data is stored and used leading to worries of misuse or exploitation, particularly in areas with weaker data protection laws. Furthermore, the promise of cryptocurrency in return for biometric data may raise ethical concerns regarding coercion of weaker groups. These concerns are further highlighted by the current investigations by different regulatory organizations.
