Spanish authorities arrest five people in $541M crypto fraud case
Spanish authorities, with the support of Europol and law enforcement agencies from the United States, France, and Estonia, arrested five individuals linked to a massive cryptocurrency investment fraud scheme that defrauded over 5,000 victims worldwide of approximately $541 million (460 million euros).
The arrests occurred on June 25, 2025, with three suspects apprehended in the Canary Islands and two in Madrid. The criminal network allegedly operated through a sophisticated global structure, employing associates across multiple countries to raise and launder funds via cash withdrawals, bank transfers, and crypto-transfers.
Investigators uncovered that the group had established a corporate and banking network based in Hong Kong, utilizing fake companies, payment gateways, and user accounts under different names and exchanges to receive, store, and transfer illicit funds. This network mixed traditional banking transactions with cryptocurrency movements to disguise the origin of the money and launder the stolen assets.
This case is considered one of the largest crypto-related frauds in Spain and highlights the increasing complexity and international reach of cryptocurrency scams. The investigation began in 2023 and remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to probe the full extent of the operation.
The coordinated international effort demonstrates growing law enforcement focus on combating crypto fraud and money laundering, with expectations that regulators will tighten oversight on exchanges and enforce stricter Know Your Customer (KYC) policies following this bust.
