Indonesia suspends Sam Altman’s World project

Indonesia has suspended the operations of Sam Altman’s digital identity and cryptocurrency project, World (formerly Worldcoin), including its World ID system, due to alleged suspicious activities and regulatory violations.

The Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Digital (Komdigi) temporarily revoked the Electronic System Operator Certificate Registration (TDPSE) for World and World ID following public complaints and a preliminary investigation.

PT Terang Bulan Abadi, the local operator of World ID, was found to be operating without the required registration as an Electronic System Operator (PSE) and lacked the necessary TDPSE certification mandated by Indonesian law.

Worldcoin’s services were registered under the TDPSE of another legal entity, PT Sandina Abadi Nusantara, which constitutes a serious breach of Indonesian digital operations law prohibiting the use of another entity’s registration for digital services.

The ministry views these violations as significant legal misrepresentations that pose potential risks to the public, prompting the suspension as a preventive measure.

The ministry plans to summon representatives from both PT Terang Bulan Abadi and PT Sandina Abadi Nusantara for formal clarification and to address the alleged violations.

This suspension aligns with Indonesia’s strict regulatory framework requiring all digital service providers to be properly registered to ensure legal compliance and protect public interests. The case also highlights broader concerns related to biometric data collection and privacy, as Worldcoin’s iris-scanning technology has faced scrutiny in multiple countries over data protection issues.
