Hong Kong Accepts Crypto for Investment Immigration

Hong Kong has officially recognized Bitcoin and Ethereum as valid proof of assets for investment immigration applications.

This significant policy shift allows applicants to use crypto holdings worth HK$30 million (approximately $3.85 million) to meet the program's asset requirements.

Successful cases include two applicants who used Ethereum and Bitcoin, respectively, with both being from mainland China.

Applicants must store their crypto assets in cold wallets or reputable exchanges like Binance. After approval, they must invest the same amount in Hong Kong within six months to qualify for a two-year visa.

Using crypto as proof of assets in Hong Kong does not inherently trigger tax implications.

Hong Kong does not impose capital gains tax on crypto, so profits from selling them are generally not taxable unless they are considered part of a business activity.

Applicants must provide detailed documentation and proof of ownership, such as wallet addresses and transaction records, to verify their crypto holdings.

Crypto assets can be stored in cold wallets or on reputable exchanges like Binance, which helps ensure security and traceability.

Hong Kong's regulatory framework for virtual assets includes anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) requirements that platforms must adhere to.

The process may involve professional services like accountants to verify financial statements and ensure compliance with investment requirements.
