Bhutan Launches Tourism Crypto Payments

Bhutan has launched the world’s first national-level cryptocurrency tourism payment system in partnership with Binance Pay and DK Bank, the country’s first fully digital bank.

This system enables tourists with Binance accounts to pay for almost all travel-related expenses-including flights, visas, hotel stays, tour guides, monument entry fees, and even local goods like crafts and street food-using over 100 cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Binance Coin (BNB), and USDC (USDC).

Payments are made via QR codes through the Binance app, with DK Bank instantly converting crypto payments into Bhutanese Ngultrum, ensuring real-time settlement and eliminating foreign exchange risks. The system features fast, secure transactions with two-factor authentication, end-to-end encryption, and zero gas fees, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional payment methods.

A key benefit of this initiative is financial inclusion: small businesses and rural vendors, many previously lacking card payment infrastructure, can now accept crypto payments using just a smartphone QR code. This opens new economic opportunities for remote communities and simplifies the payment process for international travelers, who no longer need to carry local currency or cash.

Dubbed "One Wallet, One Journey," the project aligns with Bhutan’s goals of innovation, inclusion, and sustainable development, positioning the country as a pioneer in integrating blockchain technology into national tourism.

That's an exciting development for Bhutan! Using crypto for tourism payments is such a smart and innovative move. It makes travel so much easier while supporting local businesses. "One Wallet, One Journey" sounds like the perfect slogan for this futuristic payment system. Great to see small vendors benefiting from this too - just a smartphone and they're ready to go!
