Walking With Our Eyes Closed

“Those who fail to learn from history are bound to repeat it.” The first time I heard this saying was from one of my favorite shows. It means people who don’t learn from past mistakes, experiences or events will likely make the same mistakes again. As humans, making mistakes is an inevitable part of life. However, to reduce the likelihood of mistakes or prevent future mistakes, the best thing to do is to learn from past experiences. Experience is the best teacher, after all. For example, a student who writes an exam without reading and ends up failing woefully when the result comes out he sees that he fails woefully. It is only wise for that student to learn from the previous mistakes and read well to avoid failing again. Looking at humanity and the situation of many countries in the world, it is obvious that we are not learning from our previous mistakes. We know what happened in the past, but sadly, we are not learning from history.

For today’s Hive Learners’ prompt, the community asks us to discuss why it is almost impossible for humans to learn from history. Looking at the past years, with all the things that have been happening, do you think history is about to repeat itself? Recently, scrolling through Instagram and Twitter to check updates fills me with fear. Fears that we have forgotten the things that happened in the past. Not just the facts and figures about how many deaths have happened in history, but also the pain, loss, and tears- the cost of war on lives, properties, and identities. They say humans have evolved. Yes, it is true that scientifically and technologically, we have developed past where we were in the past 5 decades. However, have we learnt anything from past events? Lately, the world feels like it has forgotten all about history, especially wars. Are we walking with our eyes closed?

Millions of people died during the First and Second World Wars. Growing up, my history teacher told us about the World Wars. He tried to tell us how gruesome they were, but I guess our brains were not yet developed enough to process things. As I grew older, I read more about the World Wars. I read how countries developed new weapons just to claim lives and destroy property. Bombs, guns, and deadly acids were used to destroy things and unalive people. Many people died, lost their identities, they lost their loved ones, and lost their homes. The world felt the impact of these wars. Even though I wasn’t present during these times, the storie di was told as the report I read online made me think that the world would say “never again” to wars.

Why would anyone want what happened in 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 to repeat itself? One would think, following the First World War and the Second World War, that countries would make peace with each other forever. However, with the look of things, it seems we have totally forgotten about history. If you look around today, it seems we did not learn anything from history when it comes to wars. With the wars that have been going on over the past years, we are gradually inching toward an era of global conflict. There are no positive effects of wars, just deaths, more deaths, destruction of countries and economies. The first and second world wars should have taught us that, but is it sad to see that we didn’t learn anything from past events?

Within these past years, there has been a war between Russia and Ukraine where a lot of people died. Currently, Iran and Israel are also doing their own. If humans are not careful, history will repeat itself with full force and unfortunately, I don’t know what can be done to fix it.

Thanks for reading.

It is the best to learn from previous happening. My dear those calling for war are so ignorant. The best way to sort issues is through dialogue. What makes people to disagree to dialogue most times is due to pride. thank you for sharing

It’s so sad history has already started repeating itself in the aspect of war. Do we now say they derive joy seeing people and families hurt, losing loved ones to the cold hands of death? When we fail to learn from the past, history is definitely going to repeat itself and this time around, it’s going to be worse just as it is already.
