The Magic Number For Financial Independence

The importance of financial independence cannot be overemphasized. It is funny how most of us weren’t worried about financial independence while growing up. Of course, some people had it very tough and had to start working at a very young age. On the other hand, there are others who didn’t even have to worry about it. All we cared about was getting good grades and having fun. As long as our parents provided for our needs and wants, we were good to go. One thing about life is that as we grow older, we start to understand life and one step after the other, responsibilities start to seep in. Back then, we used to worry about textbooks and assignments, but now we are worried about paying bills.

One thing about me is that I have always wanted to be financially independent. There are many reasons why I struggle everyday to make this dream come true. The first and most important reason is to be able to take care of my parents. It is my dream to pay them back in multiple folds for everything they have done for me and my siblings. The other reason is to create a comfortable life and environment for my family. I envision a family where I would be able to satisfy my partner and children’s wants and needs without bothering about how much I have in my pockets. And we all know that to achieve this dream, we need money. This brings me to this week’s India United’s prompt: How much money do you need to actually stop worrying about finances and live freely?

HOW MUCH DO YOU NEED?

Imagine you wake up one day and someone out of nowhere dashes you a million naira in your currency. You didn’t work for the money, the person just decides to give you, maybe an old time friend who remembered your good old days together and decides to send you a gift. How far will that money go? Some years back, one million in my currency was a big deal. It carried weight. It sounded heavy and it did a lot of things. People who had one million naira and above in their account were considered rich. It meant you are actually capable of doing big things, but today, the reverse is the case. One million naira is no longer considered a lot. Of course, you’d be able to do some things, but compared to some years back it wouldn't go that far.

Interestingly, my friends and I have had this conversation several times. Once in a while, we would gather around and talk about these things: money, cars, and how to get rich. We would say things like, “How much would make you stop hustling?” I remember when one of my friends said one million dollars would do it for him. With that kind of money, I would be able to do everything I want in this world. A million dollars converted to my currency is more than enough, but to answer this prompt, I honestly don't know. I can’t seem to place a number on the amount of money that would stop me from worrying about finances and live freely, but one thing is certain. It is a lot.

Its really sad to see how our currency is losing its worth as the day goes by. Back then, 1k is a huge deal, but now, 1k is like the hundred naira of those days.

There are many things to do with money. 1 million dollars is no where near enough for some of us to stop searching for money. The funny thing is that, the richer somebody becomes, they tend to see more things to spend on. Be it luxury, cars, jets, and even sponsoring things like charity. Nonetheless, the hustle continues, regardless.

Financial independence is the code bro. For me I think no amount of money can actually make a person financially independent, just have what to do that brings steady income is enough to achieve that.

Very interesting post, my friend. I believe financial independence is important because without it, one is forced to work solely to survive, to meet the needs of daily life, and this can be exhausting—a kind of slavery that prevents us from thinking about how to help not only ourselves but also contribute as much as possible to our surroundings. This depends on each person's purpose in life and where they place the meaning of existence. Personally, if I had to choose between financial independence and economic growth or giving up a lot of money for the common good, I would always choose the common good. But again, it depends on where each person places their sense of purpose, which is something to be respected.

I don't think there's a single answer to this question, and personally, I believe spiritual values always stand above economic ones, because the world could become a place where only those who can save themselves survive. Solidarity, humanism, and cooperation should come first in a world that is in danger, and only then financial independence and individual economy—because we are social beings and cooperation is urgently needed. That's my opinion; I know there are others, and I respect them. I also believe the world needs a spiritual awakening.

Growing up, I never really thought much about money too, but adulthood really opened my eyes. Wanting to take care of your parents really makes you work harder. That kind of dream keeps many of us going, no matter how tough things get.
