Free At Last

Everyone loves holidays. The truth is that no matter how much you love your work or school or whatever is keeping you busy, you will always enjoy the holidays and look forward to them. Holiday seasons hit differently when you are already on the brink of breaking down because of too much work. It is a time to relax, explore and enjoy without thinking of meeting deadlines. The holiday season, particularly New Year and Christmas, is a time to enjoy and have fun with friends, relatives and loved ones. I remember how my mom, siblings and I used to travel to my grandma’s place during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. My grandmother used to live in another state, very far from ours, so every holiday season, we would travel by train, which took several hours, to her place. Gone are the good old days.

Growing up, I have always loved the holiday season and would always look forward to it. When I was in elementary school, there was this two-day holiday we had; they called it the mid term break. As the name implies, we had gotten to the middle of the time. The holiday was just Thursday and Friday, then we also had Saturday and Sunday as free days, making 4 days free from school. At the time, I wished that the holiday would last longer than those four days. I am not sure if it was because I didn't really like school, but at the time, I'm sure I would pick the mid term break over any school day.

Today’s Hive Learners’ prompt is: HOLIDAY SEASON. The community asks us if we need more holidays. When you look at your country’s calendar, do you think there are enough holidays in a year? A few months ago, I was still an undergraduate. During my first semester in my final year, everything felt so choked that there was no break to even breathe. The free time we had was swallowed up by our project work. Of course, after the first semester’s exams, we were given a 2 week break. But the break was so short that some of us did not bother to travel home. And after 2 weeks, school resumed and we were back to it; rushing to classes, preparing for tests and presentations and at the same time, working on the project.

However, now that I'm done with school, I have all the free time in the world. Every day feels like a holiday. The only difference is that I still have to work, which is quite a lot, but at least, compared to when I was still an undergraduate, I no longer wake up very early to attend 8 am classes. I no longer read books to meet deadlines. I can't even remember the last time I opened a school-related book, and trust me, the feeling is so great. Currently, I don’t need more holidays. For me, things are just perfect the way they are. A few months ago, I could literally have paid for a holiday, but now, things are good the way they are.

ARE THERE ENOUGH HOLIDAYS IN MY COUNTRY?

I would say things are good the way they are. The truth is that if the government decides to add more holidays to the calendar, those who want to work will still work. Even on public holidays, people still work. Everyone is struggling to put food on their tables, it just falls on individuals to fix holidays for themselves. So yes, in my opinion, things are just good the way they are. Of course, everyone loves the holiday, but I don’t think there'd be any point in altering the calendar so that there would be more holidays.

WOW! We are in the same shoes. I was actually praying for holidays and now that I have graduated, I am free at last.
The thing is that I am tired of the freedom. I want to go back for my masters. Hahaha 😂.

Hehe. My mom wants me to go for my masters. I don’t think I want that. At least for now.

Actually if we are getting weekly off then it's good and if it's 5 days working a week then it's too good.
You told very correct - their are many people who works on holiday to put the food to their table.

My thought, too, Favour. Fixing the calendar to add more holidays isn’t ideal even for the economy. Things are hard for most people and it is by going to work, some actually get to avoid some challenges especially when they just need to clear off their brain and at that point, staying at home all day won’t fix it. Aside from that, the hustle is real and everyone wants to work to put food on the table.

Exactly, Princess. Even if the government made it a rule, some people will not even obey it at all.

Thanks for stopping by, ma.

Omoo, you’re living the life.I want to be like you when I grow up.😂

People are out there looking for money day and night, but we must remember we need to rest also. All work and no play……
