Embracing The Rainy Season
Just as Beowulf wrestled Grendel and Grendel’s mother, today, I wrestled hand-in-hand with writer’s block. After publishing my first post of the day, I was buzzing with energy and eager to publish another post. My heart danced happily, and my hands were hot. But as I sat down to write, my mind went completely blank. Poof! All the energy I had in me magically vanished. I steered still at my screen, not knowing what to do. I scribbled a few words out, only to delete it the next moment. This cycle repeated for what felt like an eternity.
After about 5 minutes, I decided to give up. Sometimes, it is better to give up, restrategize, and try again. Two hours later, I found myself exploring different communities on Hive for inspiration. That's when I saw a contest in the India United community. Although the contest expired 12 days ago, I could not resist blogging about the interesting topic. The theme is; what is your favorite season?
In my country, we have two seasons- the dry season which is also known as the harmattan season, and the rainy season. The dry season brings dust and scarcity of rainfall, while the rainy season comes with frequent rainfall. Both seasons have their advantages and disadvantages, but I’m a lover of the rain. I'll choose the rainy season over the Harmattan season over and over again. I think it is safe to say that most people would choose the rainy season over the harmattan season. Well, the rainy season may not be everyone’s favorite, but for me, it helps connect to my inner self and uplift my spirit.
One of the reasons why the rainy season is my favorite is that it helps bring life to plants. It works like magic. Pure magic. This is also why farmers eagerly await the rainy season. Our crops rely on the rain to germinate and grow well. During the harmattan season when there is no rainfall, plants wither away. But during the rainy season crops and different flowers blossom and bear fruits, bringing joy to the faces of farmers. I have a small garden at the back of my house where I grow vegetables. My parents also own a farmland where we plant different crops. During the rainy season, crops that struggle to germinate during harmattan will grow well. Although the rainy season has its disadvantages- weeds (crops’ worst enemy) grow faster, the advantages outweigh its disadvantages.
One interesting thing to know is that I am a pluviophile. A pluviophile is someone who loves the rain. Yes, I am completely in love with the rain. When it rains, I enjoy wrapping myself in multiple layers of thick blankets. My duvet alone is not enough to set me in the mood, I start wrapping myself with thick clothes, and then I finish with my comfy duvet. I like to leave my window open so that the fresh breeze that comes with the rain can blow in, filling the room with joy and happiness. I like to snuggle up in my favorite spot-the edge of the bed. Then, I lie down and stare at the ceiling, allowing my mind to wander to an unknown destination.
The rainy season is perfection in one of its purest forms. The rain provides an atmosphere to look within myself. I find it difficult to share my struggles, emotional wants, and needs with people. But the sound of the rain is so therapeutic, that I find myself telling my secrets to its rhythm. I have to admit, when I first realized I had become slightly obsessed with the rain, I was a bit worried. But as time went on, I came to realize that my love for the rain was actually a good type of obsession. It brings me peace, comfort, and joy.
Thanks for reading.
