Discovering A New World: Manga And Graphic Novels
For many of us, reading is more than a hobby. It has become a part of us that we cannot do without, and when we manage to do without reading for a few days, we feel like a part of us is missing. It is like being lost in space and reading books is the only thing that can bring us back to reality. I enjoy reading different genres of books, from action, adventure, and romance to science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Romance might not be my usual cup of tea, but I do explore the genre once in a blue moon. When it comes to reading books, many of us are familiar with traditional novels and books. Before technology and the human mind expanded, traditional books were in place and everyone resorted to it. However, there's a whole world of other genres that might be slightly better than traditional books (or not). Some of these forms of storytelling are Manga and Graphic novels.
Graphic novels and manga started gaining popularity in the late 19th century. The term “graphic novel” was coined by Richard Kyle in 1964. On the other hand, Manga is a Japanese form of storytelling that has been in existence in Japan since the early 18th century. Both graphic novels and manga gained widespread popularity in the late 19th century. Basically, manga and graphic novels are forms of storytelling that combine text and pictures (more pictures) to tell a story or explore themes. They come in print and digital formats. These forms of storytelling have captured millions of hearts with their colorful pictures, and short, but creative dialogues. However, some people still hesitate to dive into the world of Manga. #Mondayhivebookprompt asks us to discuss manga and graphic novels. What do you think are the biggest reasons for people to hesitate to read manga and graphic novels?
To start with, many people view manga and graphic novels as “children’s materials.” I have been a fan of cartoons, anime, manga, manhwa, and graphic novels for as long as I can remember. I grew up exploring these genres, and now that I am an adult, I still enjoy them. When I was a kid, cartoons and these other forms of storytelling were good, but not as developed as they are now. Over the years, comic writers have gotten more creative. Despite this, people are still stuck with the mentality that these forms of storytelling are for kids. I grew up with 3 older siblings. A few years ago when we were all together, I would often turn on the TV and watch the only channel I was interested in: Cartoon Network. My siblings would always say, “Why would you watch cartoons when you're not a kid.” My friends also say similar things when they see me reading comics or watching anime, they tell me to watch a more mature movie like The Expendables. Yes, I have seen The Expendables- really nice, but I'd still choose my favorites over and over again.
Moving on, another reason people hesitate to read manga and graphic novels is because they are deeply rooted in traditional books. As I mentioned above, traditional books are one of the oldest forms of storytelling. Many people are not familiar with manga and graphic novels because they are a while different format compared to traditional books. As a result, they feel hesitant to venture out of their comfort zones. For example, my mom is a book lover, just like me. She's been reading books long before I was born. During the '90s, she devoured books by James Hadley Chase, her favorite author. Throughout her life, she has consumed traditional books. Now, imagine introducing manga and graphic novels to her; she'll likely find the fusion of text and images that they offer confusing. Moreover, many people prefer traditional books because the characters and plot are well-developed.
Also, there's a misconception that manga and graphic novels are only about superheroes and their heroic deeds, and not so many people are interested in this type of genre, particularly romance readers. Interestingly, these forms of storytelling explore more genes than you think. From action, sci-fiction to romance, and adventure.
In conclusion, these are the reasons people hesitate to read manga and graphic novels. They shallow themselves in misconceptions without even getting to it. If you're interested in reading, you can make use of Webtoon.

I actually prefer traditional books. I have never had the opportunity to read manga and graphic novels. I will give them a try
Hey there, Kelvin. Manga and graphic novels are nice. I suggest you start with a simple and short one.
Thank you for this post!
I wonder if webtoon is a free to use app, I will definitely try it and thank you!!
Hello, friend. Yes, Webtoon is free.
Goodluck exploring!❤️
I love graphic novels, I usually read them on webtoons app. Actually I'm working on writing one myself, about bolivian legends. I made a pilot version weeks ago about the legend of the coca leaf:

I'm working on more legends now! Good article!
Super cool! I just read your post and dropped a comment. I have got so many questions.
Have you read The Watchmen? That was the last graphic novel I read, and I really enjoyed it. Great visuals and a really cool storyline.
No, I haven't read it. Where do you recommend I read it?
It should be available at your local library or to purchase somewhere online. They made a movie about it that was also quite good, so I'd imagine it isn't too uncommon to find in bookstores.
Alright. I'll check it out.
Thank you.
No problem. I hope you enjoy it!

I totally loved your post. It's awesome to discover new forms of storytelling and although I love traditional books, I also adore graphic novels and mangas. Having illustrations doesn't mean it's a less serious story or less developed. On the contrary, sometimes it is a format that allows the author to explore his creativity way more.
Thanks for this post and the app recommendation! I definitely need to download it.
I agree with you that Mangas and graphic novels allow the author (and readers) to explore their creativity more. Traditional books are also nice- I enjoy reading old books.
I should show my mum this post, manga and anime arent only for kids truly. I also love the romance genre most... especially highschool romcom like relife or horimiya
Haha. Please, show her. Where do you read Mangas?
I prefer manga park for reading, but I usually watch anime more.
Indeed, manga and graphic novels could be intended for children and young people, although there are also many topics to reflect on that could be interesting for adults, beyond the structure and visual elements.
I'm glad you agree with me that Manga and graphic novels are not just for kids. They also have interesting themes that can be enjoyed by adults.
Thanks for stopping by.
Oh yes! I love manga and graphics. Not that I read them though but I love the images, they keep me interested. The only problem is, since I have other things I do for fun, reading a book just doesn’t top the list for me but when I do, I enjoy it more than I expect.
And yeah, a lot of persons see these things as childish but that is also the reason they miss out in all the fun that comes with reading these kind of books. I haven’t tried reading any graphics online tho but I once lived with someone who told me a few stories and it was nice.
If you're not a book lover but you're willing to start reading books, mangas and graphic novels can be a great way to start. There are less writings and more pictures and I know for a fact that many people would prefer to scroll through pictures than read bulky writings.
Sweet! I'll tell you more manga stories soon. Very soon, love.
I’d love to listen to you tell me stories from graphics and mangas, love.
And yeah, I think I will be more of a booky when I’m done with school. For now, I just don’t have the confidence to do both academic books and other books.
Take your time, love. You'll become a full-fledged booky after school.❤️
It's funny how the prejudice that manga or graphic novels are "childish" is still so deeply rooted, isn't it? As if the images took away from the depth of the story... It reminded me of when I was judged for watching Attack on Titan ("Isn't that a violent cartoon?") and then the plot turned out to be more complex than many live-action series.
It is funny and quite concerning.
Recently, I mentioned in one of my posts that one anime you must watch at least once is Attack on Titan- one of my top favorite animes.
You entered in the club pay attention manga and graphic novels can create a huge addiction 😋😋👍
Hehe. That’s why you need to be careful.
I don’t know why I feel like I will enjoy reading a physical copy of manga and graphic novels, instead of their ebooks.
I will check out the webtoon app. Thanks for sharing this great piece!
