Nature’s unusual displays on the road less travelled – the African edition
Life really regains its animated aspect when you’re on the road. My recent travels allowed me to see the natural beauty of this southern coastline of Africa from a different angle, and I wanted to share with you today some of the interesting angles on Nature here way down south. There is a vast wide open country, which echoes much of the entire African continent in its massive, yet sometimes stark landscapes.
If you travel along the south coast of Africa, you will invariably come to one of the best known parts, called the Garden Route. Here you will find the Lakes region, with its several connecting lakes which all closely hug the Indian Ocean shoreline. My journey allowed me to see the region from the heights. The photo was captured while driving, so is just a quick snap though enough to capture the lakes, and even the little island in the middle. Just to the back is the wide ocean, facing south toward Antarctica.
If you appreciate the wide open natural terrain and the opportunity to go camping in the bush, then Africa has plenty of space for you to explore. And South Africa is geared up for the outdoor enthusiast, since the climate is conducive to outdoor activity as well as adventure and nature sports, like swimming, abseiling and even bungy jumping from some of the high bridges along this southern coastline.
My swimming experience was not all that dangerous at all. In fact it was more of a bath. Nevertheless, I was able to bathe in the middle of the bush, surrounded by indigenous and sparsely inhabited terrain, most of which is untouched and natural, as nature designed it. No crocodiles to worry about any more of course, since civilization has encroached. However, the feeling of bathing in the middle of the bush in a nice little pool, really felt like the best of both worlds. Taming the wild makes for a pretty epic experience here as nature envelopes you in her embrace, all while you float in the pools of peaceful purity.
The purifying experience is good for the body, mind and soul. The air is clean and refreshed by sea breezes from the warm Indian ocean. The wild side of Africa is still visible here but enough taming has taken place to allow for the best of both worlds. Life can be truly serene and clean so far south on the African continent, with the ocean nearby. I would highly recommend a visit if you get the chance. The exotic African flora proliferates throughout the region, which borders on the Karoo semi-desert just further north from this southernmost coastline. Africa is a haven of succulent cactus and plant species which are actually medicinal and healing for all sorts of ailments.
And then there are the monkeys. They are elusive and hard to capture on film. But I managed to capture one photo of the brave little indigenous monkey as he sat on the fence observing me as I observed him. It’s generally the males that are brave enough to linger openly despite the presence of humans nearby. It’s not the “big five” admittedly but it was still a glimpse at nature in the wild. And that makes a difference compared to our usual domesticated four-legged friends and pets.
That said, I also came across a very curious pet dog who had two different color eyes, like David Bowie. It’s a completely natural phenomena and the dog is no worse for it. He just looks more fascinating, which gets him a mention in today’s post on the curious displays of nature – both wild and tame – here on the vast open expanse of the African shoreline way down south, just before Antarctica. If you ever wish to see life in the wild, then come and check it out. You will find loads to fill your memory banks for years to come.
