THE FAMOUS "BIG DICK" OF PEDRO VELHO/RN (EN/PT)

In the city of Pedro Velho, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, there is a gigantic tree that is not part of the region's native flora. Its magnitude is visible from afar, and its beauty and exuberance stand out among the other plants in the area it inhabits. We can say it's one of its iconic landmarks, a cultural heritage of the municipality.
This tree is a Samaumeira, a plant native to the Amazon. According to indigenous people of the past, it is a sacred tree that protects humanity. Speaking with the person responsible for the site, I learned that the person who planted this tree was Mr. Francisco Barbosa de Oliveira, a long-time resident of the region.
This tree is much more than just a tree; whenever visitors appear, there's a challenge to see how many people are needed to encircle its trunk. If you count adults, it takes 30 people.
There are also beliefs and legends surrounding its existence. There's the legend of a pot of gold hidden in its roots. I wonder if anyone has ever tried to cut it down in the past to be sure if it exists or not. The most dangerous belief is associated with a giant serpent that circles the tree at night and protects it.
I missed the antique shop that used to be there; after the owner passed away, it was deactivated and destroyed. It was a wonderful place to access items from the past, a good way to remember our childhood. Near the tree, there are also the Ruins of the Church of Santa Rita de Cássia, a Baroque-style building that survived the flooding of the Curimataú River in 1901.
Getting to this place is very simple; there's a road that leads directly to the large tree, taking between 5 and 10 minutes from the center of Pedro Velho to this tourist spot. The downside is that they didn't know how to take advantage of the place; the only house that existed was destroyed, and it's literally in the middle of nature and next to the road. If you're traveling with family, I recommend bringing some food and water. Its shade is an excellent place to camp.

Na cidade de Pedro Velho, no estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil, existe uma árvore gigantesca que não faz parte da flora nativa da região. Sua magnitude é visível de longe, e sua beleza e exuberância se destacam entre as demais plantas da área que habita. Podemos dizer que é um de seus marcos emblemáticos, um patrimônio cultural do município.
Essa árvore é uma Samaumeira, planta nativa da Amazônia. Segundo os povos indígenas do passado, é uma árvore sagrada que protege a humanidade. Conversando com o responsável pelo local, descobri que quem plantou a árvore foi o Sr. Francisco Barbosa de Oliveira, morador antigo da região.
Essa árvore é muito mais do que apenas uma árvore; sempre que visitantes aparecem, surge o desafio de ver quantas pessoas são necessárias para circundar seu tronco. Se contarmos os adultos, são necessárias 30 pessoas.
Há também crenças e lendas em torno de sua existência. Existe a lenda de um pote de ouro escondido em suas raízes. Fico pensando se alguém já tentou derrubá-la para ter certeza de sua existência. A crença mais perigosa está associada a uma serpente gigante que circula a árvore à noite, protegendo-a.
Senti falta da loja de antiguidades que ficava ali; depois que o dono faleceu, ela foi desativada e demolida. Era um lugar maravilhoso para encontrar objetos do passado, uma ótima maneira de relembrar nossa infância. Perto da árvore, também estão as ruínas da Igreja de Santa Rita de Cássia, uma construção em estilo barroco que sobreviveu à enchente do Rio Curimataú em 1901.
Chegar a esse lugar é muito fácil; há uma estrada que leva diretamente à grande árvore, a 5 ou 10 minutos do centro de Pedro Velho. A desvantagem é que não souberam aproveitar o local; a única casa que existia foi demolida, e fica literalmente no meio da natureza, ao lado da estrada. Se estiver viajando com a família, recomendo levar comida e água. Sua sombra é um excelente lugar para acampar.
