The Friday Got Me on My Farm
Hello Hivers!!
Welcome to my space. I'm excited to be here.
The rainy season started just last month. It came a bit late this year. Many people especially the farmers were eager and waiting for it to come. They have had their tools ready, seeds packed, and land cleared and prepared. I was also ready with my big hoe.
The moment the rain came, people ran to their farms. I also carried my hoe and followed. When I reached my farm, the first thing I did was to make ridges. I started making ridges. It’s was not easy at all. You needed to see the way I was tired and sweating while making those ridges.
After making the ridges, I sprayed some chemicals to kil all those stubborn grasses. This was to make sure the land was clean before planting anything. Then I planted my crops, groundnut, corn, millet and guinea corn.
Some weeks passed, and the crops began to grow. I visited the farm often to check on them and the last time I came and saw the farm, I was so excited to see the crops coming out of the soil. Everything was growing well and greenish. Though the rain was not too much this time but the crops were green and fresh.
Now, the time for weeding came. The unwanted plants that grow among crops when they are not invited. If you don’t remove them on time, they’ll block the real plants from growing, they will take space and nutrients from the your crops. They will stop your crops from growing well. So I knew I had work to do.
This Friday happen to be a mid term break in my place of work. So I used the opportunity and go to the farm. My mother and younger brother came along with me. We carried our hoes, cutlasses, and water bottles. The sun was hot, but we didn’t mind. We were ready to clear those stubborn weeds.
The work was not easy. Some of the weeds were tall and hard and some were even hard to pull out. The worse part is the farm is located on a rocky area, making it hard sometimes to weed. But we kept going. My younger brother was busy complaining but we had no choice but to keep weeding.
I always wonder why women have this natural energy when it comes to weeding. I've observed this with many women. My mom was very fast as if the farm was on a smooth land. She cleared her own part quickly and then came to help us.
After a while, we took a short break under a mango tree near the farm. Sitting there, we looked at our farm how it's looking neat where we have cleared already. The crops stood well after we cleared the weeds.
We returned to work and continued weeding until about 2pm. By the time we finished, we were all tired and exhausted. The farm looked neat around. The crops had space to grow well and we could already imagine the good harvest that is coming this year.
As we walked back home, we discussed about how the harvest would be and my mom said it might come late next month or early the month after.
Well, we are all looking forward to that time of the harvest. I can already see myself uprooting the groundnuts from the ground and filling bags with corn.
I came back home so tired and all exhausted. Rushed took my bath and rested. Tomorrow I will go to the other farm and continue. Just pray that the harvest this year will be plenty.
Welcome! Looks like a great start to the rainy season on your farm! 🌱🐴 Hope you get a good harvest!
Honestly I've being in anticipation for it coming and it finally did. I believe this year's harvest will be plentiful. Just hoping and praying it yields.
