Reflecting on Self-Discipline
Self-discipline is one of the most important qualities that a person can have in life. When we talk about self-discipline, we are talking about the ability to do what is right even when we do not feel like doing it. Being able to say no to things that might distract us and yes to things that help us grow.
One way to understand self-discipline is by reflecting ourselves and looking at the tiny small things we do every day. The waking up early, brushing our teeth, helping with chores at home, making our bed and even going to bed on time are all examples of self-discipline and these might seem like simple things, but they play a big and crucial role in affecting and shaping our lives. When we can control ourselves in the small things we do daily, we prepare ourselves for the bigger challenges that life may bring.
Lately I've been trying to reflect on myself to check whether if I've been managing my time well, keeping up to my promises, been doing the things I said I would do. Was I staying true to my goals and task?
I came to the understanding that one thing was a major challenge that I was struggling with. Which is Procrastination. Always shifting task, I wasn't keeping true to what I was supposed to do immediately. I decided to make a daily time table to organise what I will do during the day.
So each time I wake up, I draft out all what I'm to do during the day and make sure I stay truth to it and carry out every important task of that day.
In as much as I plan for my day, the day might come with its own unplanned tasks. The best thing I do is to make sure I don't procrastinate, no matter what the day might bring except it's beyond my control.
So self discipline made me have a routine. A routine that set the daily habits that I follow. That has help me manage my time and avoid wasting it. Waking up at the same time, planning my day, and having time for myself and rest keep me organized and focused.
There are moments in which self-discipline reminds me of what is more important in life. There are moments in which I might want to sleep to much or do something else that might be right at that moment but in a wrong time, at those moments, that spirit of self discipline will remind me that what I'm doing might be try but that is not the right time to do it. With that, I was able to take better decisions and choices.
Self-discipline have help me build a character of responsibility. I do not blame others for my mistakes. Instead, I take full responsibility for my mistakes and control of my actions. That has made me gain respect from others. It was just recently I discovered that most people thought I was in my 30(s) already because of the way I behave and do things differently from my peers.
Self-discipline has help me control my emotions and reactions. There are times I feel angry and frustrated which might prompt me to say or do things that might hurt others or even myself. But with that disciplined, I've learn to stay calm, think before we act, and respond in a better way that will not be offensive to others.
Self-discipline is not about being perfect. No!!!. It is about being better than we were yesterday. It is about having the spirit to do what is right, even when it is not easy. It is about staying true to ourselves and values. The secret behind every successful person we see in life today is link to self-discipline because is the bridge between who we are and who we want to become.
Thanks for reading!!
I once tried using the to-do method (time table) but it didn't work. The works and activities of the day came in different form.
But I'm still trying to stay organised 💯
