Getting out of my Shell//My Scared Nature.

My most embarrassing experience....

Hello Hive family and amazing members of the hive-reachout community. Today, I want to share with you one of the most disgracing and embarrassing experience I’ve ever encounter in my life.

Back then when I was in secondary school, I use to be a very shy type of person, introvert in nature, I don’t like sharing ideas or given responses to discussions in class. I use to be scared of standing in front of the crowd a lot.

I was one among the bring students who represent the school in most competitions that has to do with writing such as mathematics competition or essay writing but competitions like debates, spelling bee that has to do with standing in front of people to speak is a No for me, I don’t do it.

One day the school was preparing to go for a debate competition at NBS Lafia (Nasarawa Broadcasting Service), a television station in Lafia, Nasarawa State, but one of the student who was supposed to represent our school fell ill and was not coming to school and the competition is in three days. The staffs assigned to handle the debate decided to choose me to represent the guy that was ill. I told them I can’t do it but they insisted I must go.

The day of the competition came and we went to the television station. One reaching to the premises, my heart began to beat faster and fright entered me. We went straight to the studio and I saw other schools that were present, the judges getting ready, the cameras and everything in the studio set for the competition. I became more scared. The worst part is, I’m the first speaker to come on stage. When I came up to the stage, I felt a very cold sensation inside of me. My body was shivering and vibrating profusely. Seeing all eyes were on me, my colleagues, other students, the cameras pointed towards me and we were live on air, I freeze and could not talk. The judges told me to calm down and relax. The entire studio was mute like a grave yard. I started talking and began the normal salutation. But after the salutation I stopped again. The points I was to present disappeared from my head, it was as if my brain was formatted, I could not remember anything. For more than two minutes I was busy counting words and repeating the same salutation without making any point. Full with embarrassment and disgrace, I step down from the stage to my seat, until the program ended, I didn’t raise my head up. For two days I didn’t go to school. So I decided to change this nature of mine because it really embarrassed me.

When I returned back to school, I decided to join the press club (students who cast news) so that I can start getting confidence to stand in public. My first day of casting news on the assembly ground was a drama. I was counting words, stammering and shivering but I said to myself no matter how scared I am of crowd, I will continue improving and overcome that fear. With time, I progress from casting news to been the head of the club. Due to my transformation and zealousness, I became the head of other clubs. The school made me the president of FCS (Fellowship of Christian Students), the senior prefect and coordinator of the press club. I was able to overcome my scared nature.

When I was in the university, we were given a group assignment to make a presentation to the faculty, none of my group members want to present. I decided to represent my group and make the presentation. It was a presentation in front of over 3000 people and my group came 2rd out of 50 groups.

The experience I had at the television station is the most disgraceful and embarrassing experience I’ve ever faced in my life but then it changed me. I never knew a day will come that I could stand in the crowd to speak. Today I can stand anywhere to speak without fear.

I like your faith, you failed on the first day yet you didn't give up but You encouraged yourself and press on and at last you were able to overcome that fear that used to stand in front of you like a giant. Kudos to your success story.

That was a painful one, I understand how you felt and why you couldn't come to school the next two days. It won't be easy for you but you were brave enough to come back with full force and that's what makes us winners, the ability to persist and not give up..

Wow. I was also a shy person that it was hard to stand and face many crowds. Whenever I'm on stage, I shiver a lot and would feel so nervous that everything I had planned and crammed to say would disappear. It took me years to finally be able to face the crowd even though my legs still wobble but not as before but I learnt to speak up and not be afraid anymore.
I can really understand you but great you have overcome such stagefright.

Honestly, it not easy overcome stage fright. Like it became a thing of concern to me especially after that experience but thank God I'm able to over it now. And It's great that you've been able to work through and develop the confidence to speak up and face crowds too.
