Growing up, I used to think life always had a fixed path and that challenges were just signs to stop or slow down people from achieving their goals. Whenever I faced any disappointment or failure, my first reaction was usually fear or doubt. I often allowed my mind to dwell on the worst parts of situations until even small issues felt like a heavy burden.

But as I grew older and started interacting with people, listening to their achievements and the challenges they passed through, I began to understand that there is another way to live. Not with fear or doubt, but with a positive mindset and a better understanding and attitude toward life, even in the midst of struggles. So I told myself that I needed to start looking at the brighter side of life, even in small things, no matter the challenges.

Aside from disappointment or failure, I also used to be very anxious about small things. Like for example, before if someone close to me, either any of family members or friends is about traveling, I would become worried, anxious and start imagining what might happen on the way. I would think, what if this person doesn’t return or reach to his destination safely? The worst moments is when they called to say their car broke down in the middle of the road or in a lonely place. Immediately, my mind would jump to thoughts of armed robbers, kidnappers, or danger.

Any mistake I made or any failure I encountered in life then, would make me start thinking of the worst and blame myself for not being good enough. But if we look at life now, some things are not meant to be, even if they are and we fail, it shouldn't be the end. So I knew I had to change that mindset.

One day, I sat down with one of my uncles and as we were having conservation with him, he shared his life story with me. He told me how he tried so many times to get into school but never got the opportunity. Each time he applied, he didn’t get admission. He wrote entry exams six times without success, but he didn’t give up. On the seventh attempt, he finally got admitted. Many people would have lost interest after trying that many times, but he encouraged himself and kept pushing. Today, he has completed his degree and master’s, and he is now running his PhD program.

Life does not always give us what we want on a platter of gold. Sometimes we have to face disappointment to reach certain heights. From that day, I decided to change my mindset and accept whatever comes my way without fear, doubt, or anxiety.

Gradually, I started training my mind to focus on the possibilities in every situation instead of the limitations. It became a pattern and, eventually, a habit. And just like any habit, it began to shape my thinking. It changed how I respond to challenges, how I made decisions, and even how I relate with people.

I started seeing setbacks from a different angle and perspective. Instead of thinking something was the end, I would tell myself, maybe this is a lesson or a step toward something better. This mindset helped me stay calm and gave me the courage to try again.

In moments when life felt uncertain, I held on to the belief that every situation has two sides, being optimistic or being pessimistic. Choosing to be optimistic has really helped me. It helped me focus on growth rather than mistakes, on effort rather than perfection. It also made me more grateful. Instead of only seeing what was missing, I started noticing what I had.

The more I grow with this habit, the more it shaped my thoughts, my actions, and the way I carried myself. It became clear that being optimistic was no longer something I just tried to do, it had become a part of who I am.
