KISS BLOG IDEAS: WEEK #185 (Nov 8 - 14) | Emptiness is beautiful

Loss and absence tend to be frowned upon in the dominant international culture. The growing sense or drive toward the progressive, the absolutely positive, the excessive (hybris for the Greeks), the unlimited, etc., is imposed as a value and, even more so, as an attitude. Thus, anything that implies restraint, attenuation, purification, withdrawal, among other forms of manifestation of absence, is despised. Something similar occurs with silence, which would also be a manifestation of absence.

I have always admired the idea-image of emptiness in Taoist and Zen philosophy, as well as in traditional Japanese art, whether in painting, architecture, or poetry. In the latter, emptiness, absence, is a particularly important element, which finds its maximum expression in haiku. In modern Western poetry, blank spaces in the poetic space are a manifestation of this.

Being able to distill expression, strip it of the unnecessary, until reaching its essence, is an exercise that fully embodies the spiritual search for beauty that absence implies. Of course, there are other manifestations of absence, but the one I am referring to is the one that interests me the most.

Thank you for the attention.

That was well put when you said "distilling expression." I think being able to really abstract the essence of the entire experience without a lot of noise is a profound experience for everyone.

I guess that's true with different traditions and ways of living, such as Zen, because you have to live things as they are, removing all the unnecessary details to be able to experience it as a whole. This is quite ironic if you just think about it.

Thank you for sharing this. I really enjoyed how you've put into words a concept and idea of minimalism that is quite difficult to grasp.

What an interesting angle to view the prompt from. Absence as the space where nothing exists, with its own sacred beauty and role in the poetry of life. I really appreciate that. That being said, I would've loved to read something more personal about your own experience with absence ;) Cheers, and thanks for participating.

Thank you for your visit and thoughtful comment. I did not intend to talk about my personal experience, but rather to reflect on a way of understanding absence and its beauty. Talking about my personal experience would have been a bit lengthy, as it would have meant talking about my experience as a poet. Best regards, @honeydue.
