What keeps you going?

I saw on the news today that a woman jumped off a bridge and killed herself in Lagos, Nigeria, yesterday.

Surprisingly, this did not surprise many people, as many people have previously chosen this location as a suicide spot.

In the last three years, there have been reports of two to three people jumping off a bridge in this location, preferring a gruesome death to having to face life.

Life is not all we think it is.

It is surprising that, as wonderful as many people think life is, some would rather escape it than have to live it. Shouldn't we all have the same notion that life is beautiful?

Unfortunately, we do not all agree. Some people will choose to live life over and over again, while others will try desperately to avoid it.

The gift of life is unparalleled; let us consider it from a neutral standpoint: the memories we create, the ability to feel, comprehend, learn, and grow, among other things.

However, there are some challenges that we face, such as the difficulties that come with it. Sometimes the difficulties are so overwhelming that people would rather not live them at all.

We don't all have problems, don't generalize

but we share some, in our lives; this is undeniable. When we see people in pain, we often say things like "we all have problems."

Unfortunately, people react differently to their problems, and we cannot teach them how to deal with their pain.

It is true that people choose various ways to cope with their pain, and suicide is no exception. We agree that suicide is at the extreme end of the spectrum, but for many people, it is the only permanent way to end their suffering.

The creator gave us life and would not want us to end it. Unfortunately, some people are born with medical conditions that make them prefer anything other than life.

Trauma is real

For some people, being in debt, not having enough money to get by, family trauma, PTSD, victims of bullying, trauma, and a variety of other issues make it difficult for them to see the beauty in life.

People continue to live because they have attachments, commitments, and responsibilities. We frequently underestimate the power of attachments.

People are able to tolerate abusive relationships because they have humans (children) to whom they feel attached.

Sometimes we are not even living our lives; instead, we are living them for others, perhaps those we love and cherish, and that is fine. Every reason to live is a valid reason to live.

Having an excuse to keep going is not a bad thing. No matter how big or small, we are all striving for something, and this is how we maintain our sanity.

Unfortunately, not everyone can maintain their sanity, and they succumb to all temptations. We each have something unique that keeps us going. For a few, it is the love of their wealth and the luxurious lifestyle they enjoy.

There are strange reasons why life is enjoyable, and it is different for everyone. We can not all have the same reasons because we are unique. The lesson is to find something to hold onto.

It could be God's love, the hope of eternal life after this life on earth, or simply because life will be worse for those we leave behind.

The suicide psychology

The compound statement is that life is beautiful, but it makes more sense when we are connected to something.

I can not explain the psychology of suicide, so I will not sit here and say it is because suicidal people have nothing to live for, and I do not think it is depression.

Suicide is interconnected with a deeper psychology. Perhaps it is the point at which people are completely broken, or even more.

I have been through a lot in my life, but I have never considered suicide, which is probably why we should never underestimate the reasons for suicidal tendencies.

I always wonder what would cause someone to commit suicide. If I had a drug that'll make me and my family and friends live forever I'll take it without thinking. It's a sad thing. I guess finding a reason to keep going is important, even if it’s just something small. What keeps me going? Probably my vision in life and also the little things, like a good laugh, time with loved ones and hoping to see a better world

Ahh there's probably a reason why human can't live forever. I think the creator perfectly crafted the universe in ways which are perfectly synchronized.

But yes, you've stated the reasons why you choose to keep going and keep enjoying life. I think everyone has a unique reason, thanks for mentioning yours

you're right everyone does have a reason. And yes maybe it's best that things are the way they are with humans not living forever

Not a single blame on anyone who has been or is being suicidal. Life might be hard but there is always light at the end of the tunnel. That believe alone keeps me going. We on Hive ecosystem needs to spread more words across about this platform. I believe if the kind is busy the thought of suicide will disappear or become negligible.

For some, there's not always light at the end of the tunnel and that's why people eventually go on to take their lives because they don't feel like they have any hope or anything to live for. We cannot underestimate suicide especially because we don't know what those people go through

Late last year, i saw a video of an elderly mad jumping into the lagoon to end his life, his reason to commit suicide was that, he was accused of stealing money. He couldn't bare the humiliation and disgrace, so he felt death would end it all.

It's actually ridiculous seeing people commit suicide, life is worth living. I understand the fact that people are faced with life challenges that seems unbearable. Life is worth giving another chance.

Well, things like that happens. Some people cannot bear shame or bullying, just like the old man could not handle shame and they'll probably choose to end their lives. Suicide is the tail-end of what people cannot take. Unfortunately we're not all as strong

I didn't know that in Lagos and Nigeria there were so many suicides. I live in Italy and I can confirm that these things happen here too. Just 15 days ago a 45-year-old person committed suicide in the town where I live. He hanged himself, but the reasons have not yet been made known.

Most times the reasons are not known except to the deceased. Reasons for suicide are hardly comprehendable except to the people who are suicidal. It's a state of mind that's really painful. It happens a lot in Nigeria, I guess it's just a general human phenomenon irrespective of race or country

Yes, it is as you say. Probably the mind reaches stages in which it reasons differently (I don't want to say wrong). The person from my country who committed suicide a few days ago leaves behind a small daughter. Sometimes I think what reason could be so serious to make the decision to die and leave behind a small daughter? I struggle to find an answer

It's probably strange and we can never find an answer why that man will choose to leave a daughter behind. However I cannot judge the reason because the man's suicide, it's just difficult for a child to survive on their own with no parents

It sucks to hear about suicide, and I think it is just rough. It's hard to know what reasons they have for doing so and what they are fighting for, but I think its hard for anyone left behind.

Suicide probably hurts the loved ones of the people left behind, no two ways about it. It's just saddening that the number has kept on increasing.

The human brain is far from perfect and we don't really fully understand it. PTSD and depression can kick off cascades in the brain that can lead to abnormal thought and behaviors including suicidal tendencies. Now jumping off a bridge would not be a fun way to go, I could think of much better alternatives. Hopefully you'll never have those kind of psychiatric issues, I wouldn't wish them on anyone!

Jumping off a bridge is one of the hardest ways, but like you've said a lot of issues can trigger the brain, trauma PTSD and all that. It can be a very sad world for people who have given up on life.
