Is Curation flawed?
I got a comment from an account recently, and the effort they put into that comment was topnotch. It was clear they had enjoyed what they had read, and I was happy to respond accordingly.
Then I remembered I had received a comment from this account a while ago and had forgotten to check them out, so this time I decided to check their account to see who they were and what type of content they created, and all I discovered was that they put in a lot of effort into their posts, even though they do not earn as much.
Although it is a type of niche that they enjoy, not everyone will like what they create because, let us be honest, we all know what we like and what we want to see.
For example, I enjoy splinterlands content because it teaches me playing strategies while also allowing me to educate myself about the cards, time spent, and financial aspects; all for the purpose of learning.
So this account focused on a niche/interest that they enjoyed and stuck to it, which allows them to make posts without feeling like they are putting in too much effort for too little.
So after checking them out, I dropped a tipu vote, left a comment and used for own vote to curate them, it wasn't much, but it was something, perhaps an encouragement for them to keep posting. Will I continue to curate them? Yes.
Why? Didn't I just say I didn't have an interest in their niche? Well yes I don't, but they're putting in effort in their comments and posts, and this is enough for them to have support.
It means I'll continue to check out their post and curate their contents because of their personality on-chain and not because of their content.
Let's be honest, content is 30% why most people get curated on Hive. Sometimes the account's personality accounts for 50%, 20% of their on-chain footprints, and 30% of the content.
The concept of quality is relative.
So what is quality?
Most times all we do is just above decent post, and most of the time the network or the evidence of a contribution we've done long ago is one of the reasons why people get support.
This is not to say that content must be bad, but sometimes we like people before we like their content. We are not always close to the people whose content we consume, and vice versa.
However, because their content is exceptional, we occasionally like them, and as a result, we have evolved to enjoy whatever they create. This is how content creation work everywhere. It is not unique to Hive, as you may believe.
Most of the time, we believe that Hive's content creation is flawed, but it is not; it is perfect, and we are the ones who consume for various reasons and interests.
So "quality" is just a fancy term?
I recently saw a post from a Hive user, they had recently joined a project somewhere else and they were putting in mad works to get recognized with the top ranks of the project.
You might think this guy is insane; in fact, he does not need to put in the amount of energy required to scale Hive, so why is he putting it elsewhere? Because in web3, people prioritize effort and personality over productivity and end result.
Effort without rewards sounds stupid
So why?
Faith and trust in the process is why.
I used to follow a 35-year-old creator on Facebook; he has a rare form of medical condition that prevents him from working, but he chose to be a creator on Facebook.
If I were to rate his content creation in percentages, I would say he does just about averagely well, giving him a 4/10. However, I do not really follow them because of their video editing abilities.
I followed this person because of the uniqueness of their story and the reality of their struggles . Now a lot of people are fond of abusing his shortcoming, but these people are always coming everyday to watch his videos.
Even if they only criticize him, they will continue to watch his videos because, let us be honest, they enjoy the truth behind his story and personality.
However, I admit that I sometimes prefer to curate only what I enjoy or read, but in recent months, I have decided to go beyond that.
Sometimes we don't need to stay within a niche of interest to do the duty of curation. Now, I know I'm throwing the "Curation" word everything, and I shouldn't because I don't have enough stake, but I'm lucky to be a curator with tipu, and most of the time I take advantage of this.
However, I mostly use it for accounts for which I believe my vote is insufficient, as well as to increase their potential reward. I have been given before, and it would be foolish not to reciprocate.
Find a position; find an edge
As for Curation, everyone who is handing out a vote does so with partial emotions, forget the "quality" phrase. Sometimes we like the person, maybe they speak with the same accent as us, or it is something completely different; as I have previously stated, it is not a Hive thing, it is a human thing, so the system is not flawed; it is simply designed to work the way we want.
So, just as you would in real life, try to leave positive on-chain footprints, make more friends than colleagues, and find long-term users with whom you can align. Most people in real life keep the same friends for 50 years, so why not join a group of users and grow with them over time?
Interested in some more of my posts
To a large extent this is the realest stuff I have read on curation. I have asked different people questions and have gotten different answers, like, Just forget it; you need to know a big guy at the top to get curated.
This post gives people like me hope. Thank you for sharing.
The simplest answer to this issue is: belong to a solid project, build with that project, make solid friends, and also give back as well.
The complex answer is subjective.
Chasing after big accounts have it's consequences as these people can smell fake attempts at networking.
How can one know when there's a project or which project to join
Well, there are many projects on Hive. We have neoxian and so many others. I don't really know how they work, because I don't really belong anymore.

Curation is so subjective and some people's niche interests just don't garner much attention. In many cases it's a shame because of the excellent work they produce. I've grown into groups through Hive and made some great friends with common interests and goals. Or those with health issues, it's a great platform even if curation isn't always fair. It's good of you to support that person's quality material, not everyone out there is so willing to do so!
Yeah some people have exciting contents in some particular niche/interest unfortunately it doesn't appeal. In my opinion, I can also attribute this to not having a solid Curation scheme in an area. For example look at the Chinese community, they have Curation schemes and accounts that focuses on Chinese contents.
We don't have such in the US or Nigeria. Some of the trailblazer in Nigeria on Hive have since left, and they didn't build any solid Curation scheme.
Curation will never be fair, and that's why I think communities should built it to some extent. It's such a complex issue

Greetings @josediccus ,
What an interesting readable post.....you have managed to simplify a complex subject.
Curation really should be a composition of what the curator finds admirable....which can be a wide range of positives.
Thank you!
Kind Regards,

Thanks, although I don't know if I'm right in my assessment of how Curation works, but maybe I'm right to an extent.
I like to share my thoughts and ideas regarding concepts on Hive, and I'm grateful that many of will read and leave their thoughts.
Thanks for your thoughts as well.

curation is flawed when a user claims to be using AI in articles and yet receives 70+ hive on every posts and no one can do anything since it's all big stakes autovotes
It's a shame this is happening, but if it's true, they'll probably get caught someday. It has happened in the past and they've been caught, I'm sure same will happen
Actually the user has already been caught, hivewatchers left some comments and the user itself confirmed usage of Ai in the comments, but stakes are too big and curation blind upvotes...

A very apt question and an interesting topic. With your permission, I will share my opinion. The curation system, in my opinion, is really far from ideal. This is in general. Everyone should have the opportunity to express themselves in those communities where it is appreciated. There used to be a Community "Always a Flower", where people like me could publish their works. However, the Community was left without support and We are forced to look for a new niche for ourselves. It is difficult, and it is difficult to join a new community if you are not an old-timer on the platform. Therefore, I single out two problems for myself: there are not enough suitable Communities for publications (we need to adapt), and the second (maybe more curators are needed so that they can process a larger number of publications)? What do you think?

No. We need less, instead.
We need more people, who vote with their own stake.
Keep powering up. You are doing ok.
With more power, you can curate with more impact.

As @felixxx has said, we don't need more curators, we need the ones we already have, to be intentional. Curation is everyone's duty.

Ohhh Jose, how do you always know the right things to say and in the most amazing way?
Despite being young your wisdom is remarkable and I admire you for that.
Your posts keep me hooked from start to finish. There’s always something new to learn from them, and I’m genuinely happy for the GIFT of you on Hive.
PS: I’m a silent fan🥰
The knowledge is there to see on the Blockchain. I think there nothing really spectacular, anyone can pay attention and see that this is how it works.
However, thank you for the kind words, the idea was to get a reader interested and see for themselves the points I was trying to make.
Plus, I'm not that young, I just have a medical condition that makes me look so, I'm 32.
Thanks for always taking the time to read as well.

its really nice of you to go beyond what you read and enjoy, so the quality of content is behind a persons passion right? I think if a story is read we all we know if the person enjoys what he does or not and this is unique. thanks so much for this piece
I don't only curate what I read, most time I curate the effort and the on-chain dedication of a user. It's the same with many people here.
yahh absolutely
The curation system isn't ideal, but I do think it's still decent here on Hive. I find that curation trials end up helping quite a bit and making relationships helps quite a bit.
The curation isn't perfect, but I think it isn't flawed either. It's just human thingy. I know that some of the people who do not care about this ecosystem gets more support than those who do, and it's unfair in this aspect.
One problem I have with Curation on hive is some accounts who have auto vote for themselves , earning decent Curation for each post they publish...for years without a review! Now, some of these account have felt so much comfortable and post micro blogging posts on hive, and still earn their upvotes...power down like tommorw Bo day ..u know how free money be naw. Sometimes , it's annoying to see the nonsense they publish...low effort...scanty text, yet, some people spend hours creating posts without any form of encouragement
I understand that all of us apply emotions when it comes to curation just the way you have Explained above ..but if there is a way people can start reviewing those in their auto vote lists and see if they still really deserve that upvote, then it will better
I know some of those accounts. The problem is that some of the big accounts who put them on auto vote are not even present on Hive, and some of them are present but they don't really bother to even check the people they curate because of their laziness.
Unfortunately these people also just wants to make their curation rewards without checking. I understand, it feels sad that the ones who don't care are the ones getting the most support, but if most big Curation accounts can review their voting activities, it'll be way better.
