How Do You Solve Curation Scarcity?
I do my Hive curation for about 45 minutes to an hour, and during this time, my vote weight fluctuates between 98% and 75 or 76, occasionally dropping to the low 70s. Surprisingly, I do not even do 80% of the curation I want.
Sometimes I skip the accounts I am supposed to curate because I do not want my VP to drop below 70. Most days, I want it to stay between 78 and 80 percent, but it occasionally drops to 74 percent, as it did today.
The problem is that I have some accounts on auto-vote, and once my VP reaches 85%, my account is no longer able to vote for them and shuts down automatically. I do this solely to protect my VP.
However, I make sure to vote these accounts again the next time, especially if my auto votes fail to reach them. This creates a problem because I now have less VW to do manual curation for the day.
Scarcity (Hoarding the resources)
So scarcity sets in, and I begin to create a preference scale, reducing the VP that should go here and there while probably ignoring some other accounts that I should have curated for the day.
Unfortunately, the VP must be protected. Sometimes I go for 12 to 14 hours without doing any form of voting, just for the VP to recharge.
Scarcity can be extremely stressful, especially because it prevents you from expressing your full potential, behavioral tendencies, or capacities. This is why anyone with 500HP or more has a voting slider. You can choose to give everyone a portion while keeping a healthy vote weight.
A slider makes you a sort of a manager. This is because you control how you use your VP, and if it were unlimited, everyone would constantly throw 100% everywhere. Most people can only do 2 to 4 100% before hitting 50%, at which point their vote weight is toast, and it takes a few days to reach 100% again.
A check in the system
Personally, I don't dislike the scarcity; it is not evil, but rather a check on potential excesses. Nobody should have unlimited resources or capacity to do whatever they want. This is how dictatorship begins. When people taste what it feels like to be unlimited, they will eventually succumb to temptations, which corrupts the mind.
On the other hand, scarcity has a disadvantage: it causes people to have preferences, it fosters excessive managerial tendencies, and it allows people to make difficult decisions when it comes to allocating resources correctly.
Scarcity is what causes skewed allocation, which unfortunately leaves you powerless. Most of the time, we are drawn to where the resources are, which can lead to a sense of preferentialism. It is what causes people to be loyal to some while disloyal to others. It also causes circle jerks.
Abundance doesn't equal contentment
However, I believe that unlimited abundance will be far more dangerous than scarcity. People are known for being greedier even when they have more. We believe that abundance brings contentment, but it can also create a desire for more.
This psychology is strange, but it is true.
It is never a problem to maintain a balance, and I sometimes enjoy the intrigue of creating a preference scale.
Yes, I agree that I would like to add more accounts to vote, but I do not currently have the capacity to do so; perhaps someday, maybe not.
Scarcity does not only occur at the lowest level. Even whale accounts do not have enough to give out.
This is because the more they have, the greater the responsibility to do more. However, the more accounts willing to take on responsibility the lesser the scarcity.
The system has to create people who wants to take on more curating responsibilities, and this will reduce the feeling of excessive scarcity and lobbying that happens at the grassroots and at the top as well.

I think you're right. You're responsible with your curations and have enough HP that your votes give you a voice here on Hive. Scarcity of votes isn't necessarily bad, but you earn more on curations with usage. You have to find that nice middle ground!
I hope you've had a good day over there!

I want to have a high VP always, but I also want to curate often. At the end of the day I can't do both, a diminishing return is always hit, and I end up becoming a manager. I think it can be fun lol.
I got told by a friend my VP is so small I should just sit it out until it's more significant. There's the feeling when you want to curate more but have to babysit your vote weight, just like you trying to stretch a small pizza for a big group. I've put the vote on hold but because of addiction let me just use it again on your blog 🤣🤣🤣
Not necessarily. You can still use your VP, and just try as much as possible not to exhaust it. However you can use it actively to vote on comments as well. Although I don't know how much you currently have, but when you reach 500 HP, you'll have the opportunity to use a slider
oh that's nice then I'll work my way to the 500 HP
Reading this post, I rushed to go check my voting manna, and boy, it's nuked - 64%. This isn't good at all 😂.
I need to give it time to recharge. Someone should put me on reminder;
"Keep off from voting" 😂
You can use auto votes, or if you're a manual voter, make sure to always check your VP everyday, and try to jeep it above 70 at all time. Doing this will help your vote to pack some decent weight.
I'm on auto vote and equality do lots of manual curation, both on long form contents and threads. I really need to cut down on the manual voting.
I think the right balance between lots of voting and no voting is a good middle ground. Sadly my voting power is frequently reaching up to the high 90's because a fair bit of the people that I had on auto don't really post anymore, and Curangel needs time to recharge. Thankfully I end up using a bunch of my VP every evening to get it down to like 91 or 92% and be content it won't hit 100, but I have plenty of opportunity to go further if I find a good one. It's funny because I dislike going into the 80's! I want a healthy vote strength :D

I don't mind going into the 80s and that's because almost 100% of users on my auto are actually frequent posters and since I'm a daily manual curator, I use a lot of my VP.
I think you have a healthy voting culture, I want to have something like this too but sadly I can't eat my cake and have it. Since you're careful never to hit 100% I think that's healthy.
I hope you can find more active users to curate or add on your auto. I think these set of creators makes sure you never hit 100%
It's tough to strike a balance, but I have found that I don't need to focus on voting power as much. So long as it isn't below 70% and doesn't overfill. I just continue on with what I normally do. It does make people think about where they put their votes, and I think that is good for the system though.
Not going below 70% is actually very good. For me, I always stay within that range after my daily Curation for the day. Striking a balance also is very important too.
Nice topic! I often go under 70% of voting power, but I think it is more important to give as many low votes as possible than a few high votes. I also always try to leave a comment when I vote to keep the interaction between me and my followers active. I consider this last thing as important as a vote
I give about 4 to 5 high votes per day and that's why I stay within 70s.. although I let it recharge for like 15 hours again before I use it. This is what I've always done for a very long time. I also consider my engagers very important, as content without consumers is nothing
You prefer giving upvotes with a higher vp, and you are also a daily manual Curator with some accounts on auto vote. This is really difficult to see your account maintain 80% VP always and I understand that you need to skip some posts when necessary.
I think it's a whole lot of maths required to find the right balance with your Curation culture, but I trust you to approach it smartly, while utilizing the curation rewards.
You are doing well, Joe 😇
Thanks for explaining a bit about how to possibly manage curation. I've wondered how members above a certain level decide how and when to curate and who they choose content creators to auto-vote.
I only have two Hiveans who publish daily on auto-vote. The remainder I try to curate every two days, while allowing my power to recharge. Staying above my 70% threshold is difficult because I want to support as many as I can. Not always possible, and hate to pick and choose as you say. There are so many who produce good content but don't have the support of large accounts.
Although my vote is small, I still try to curate when I locate good content with rewards less than 5 Hive.
Take care and have a good start to your weekend.

Thanks @topcomment for your support made possible by the manual curation of @friendlymoose. I appreciate it. Take care @friendlymoose and have a good start to your weekend.
I think top accounts have favourite creators that they curate, and they also find more good creators along the way.
With 19k HP it'll be difficult to keep your HP above 70% unless you don't use 100% when voting. I think there's no magic or hack to do it. If you constantly curate manually, you'll have your VP in the 50s.
However I think you can actually allow your VP to recharge for days, I've done that a few times.
You'll just have to make sacrifices when it comes to Curation
Yes, I see that now with my VP consistently hovering in the 50%. I'll take your advice and let it rest for the 3 day recharge, then perhaps give support in the 50 - 75% range instead of 100%. Thanks so much for responding. I appreciate it. Take care.
