Contact lenses that allow you to see in the dark and with your eyes closed

They have created a pair of contact lenses so technological that it puts us at the level of the Atlas robot with super vision, allowing us to see in the dark or rather see even with our eyes closed, it may seem like something out of a futuristic series but this technology already exists and has been tested with inhuman success.

Scientists from the University of Science and Technology of China developed lenses impregnated with nanoparticles capable of capturing near-infrared light visible to the human eye and converting it into visible light and, most impressively, all this without using a single drop of energy. What was once the domain of fiction now seems to have become a real advance in ocular bioengineering.

These contact lenses are made with microscopic particles of gold and sodium gadolinium fluoride, doped with ytterbium and erbium ions. This combination creates an optical effect known as “up conversion” in which the normally imperceptible infrared light is transformed into visible light within the spectrum that our eyes can detect, that is, they translate the invisible into something that we can see and the most curious thing is that this happens thanks to the physical structure of these particles without depending on batteries or sources. external energy sources.

And I already mention that we do not have the original images of the person using them, I am only using illustrative images, but it is a quite interesting study and I wanted to bring it, if you want the source it is always at the end of the publication.

The first tests were carried out on mice, the animals that used the lenses avoided places illuminated with infrared, while those that did not use the lenses did not perceive any difference, later in the tests with humans the results were even more surprising, the participants managed to detect infrared signals encoded in a Morse pattern and when they closed their eyes their perception improved, the explanation is that the visible light stopped interfering, allowing the infrared pulses that penetrate to the eyelids to be detected more clearly.

The lenses were still adjusted to convert different wavelength ranges into different colors, light of 980 nanometers was perceived as blue, 808 as green and above 1500 as red, that not only increased the detail of the image, but also opened an unexpected door, the use of these lenses to help people with color blindness identify colors that are normally out of their reach.

In addition to the lenses, the researchers are already testing a version attached to glasses, which should offer even more visual details. The current focus is detecting infrared light from LEDs, but the plan is to expand to capture more varied sources.

The applications are countless, discreet communication using flashing light, operations in the dark, cryptography using optical signals and even anti-counterfeiting systems, the technology is still in the advanced testing phase and like any device that interacts directly with the eyes, long-term security needs to be closely monitored, but so far studies have shown that the materials used are biocompatible and have no known side effects.

And so if you could see in the dark even with your eyes closed, how would you use that power?
