The old Tacón Theatre was in the middle of the 19th century one of the most famous and renowned stages in the Cuban capital, and even in Latin America. Elegant and imposing, this theatre was not only an architectural jewel of its time but also a cultural phenomenon where some of the best artists of Cuba and Europe performed. Located on one of Havana's busiest and most emblematic avenues, the Paseo del Prado, the Tacón became a site of social and historical interest.

Over the years, the theatre changed owners until it was acquired by the Sociedad Gallega Habanera, which paid a considerable sum for its purchase. In the same place they built the Galician Centre, a space attended by the most notable of the upper class of the Galician community in Cuba.

Fortunately, when construction work began, it was decided to respect the original structure and interior design of the building, which means that today we can enjoy the majesty of one of the most splendid theatres the country has ever had.

The building currently houses the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso, a name it has borne since 2015 in homage to the great figure of Cuban and universal dance, a tribute paid during the lifetime of one of the most brilliant dancers of our country. Although the theatre is currently being restored, for many years it was the home of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, founded and directed by Alicia Alonso herself, and of the Ballet Español de Cuba. Once the work is completed, the performances that have made this place a symbol of Cuban culture will once again be presented on its stage.

For the time being, the theatre is only open to the public for guided tours of some of its rooms and installations. On these tours you can learn about the history of the place, the details of its construction, its architecture and the most important moments it has experienced.

But for me, the most amazing part of the tour is the view from the balconies and the roof, which functions as a great lookout point. From there we can contemplate a fantastic panoramic view of one of the most beautiful areas of Havana's Historical Centre.

On one side, we see the imposing National Capitol with its shining dome, a symbol of the city; in front, the Paseo del Prado and Parque Martí, with its royal palm trees guarding the sculpture of the Cuban Apostle; and on the other side, the view stretches to the horizon, where the sea merges with the sky.

This is undoubtedly my favourite part of the tour, which I have done on more than one occasion.

The Alicia Alonso Theatre, like the Tacón in its day, is another of the city's architectural relics. And although the old Tacón no longer exists as such, it continues to inhabit the Gran Teatro Alicia Alonso as part of Cuban cultural history.

El antiguo Teatro Tacón fue a mediados del siglo XIX uno de los escenarios más famosos y renombrados de la capital cubana, e incluso de América Latina. Elegante e imponente, este teatro no solo era una joya arquitectónica de su tiempo sino también un fenómeno cultural donde se presentaban algunos de los mejores artistas de Cuba y Europa. Ubicado en una de las avenidas más concurridas y emblemáticas de La Habana, el Paseo del Prado, el Tacón se convirtió en un sitio de interés social e histórico.

Con el paso de los años el teatro cambió de propietarios hasta que fue adquirido por la Sociedad Gallega Habanera, que pagó una suma considerable por su compra. En ese mismo lugar construyeron el Centro Gallego, un espacio al que asistía lo más notable de la clase alta de la comunidad gallega en Cuba. Afortunadamente, al iniciarse las obras de construcción se decidió respetar la estructura y el diseño interior original del edificio, lo que permite que hoy podamos disfrutar de la majestuosidad de uno de los teatros más espléndidos que ha tenido el país.

En la actualidad el edificio alberga el Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso, nombre que lleva desde el año 2015 en homenaje a la gran figura de la danza cubana y universal, un homenaje que se realizó en vida de la que ha sido una de las bailarinas mas brillantes de nuestro país. Aunque el teatro hoy se encuentra en proceso de restauración, durante muchos años fue la sede del Ballet Nacional de Cuba, fundado y dirigido por la propia Alicia Alonso, y del Ballet Español de Cuba. Una vez que se concluyan las obras, volverá a presentarse en su escenario las funciones que han hecho de este sitio un símbolo de la cultura cubana.

Por ahora el teatro solo está abierto al público únicamente para recorridos guiados por algunas de sus salas e instalaciones. En ellos se puede conocer la historia del lugar, los detalles de su construcción, su arquitectura y los momentos más importantes que ha vivido.

Aunque para mi lo más asombroso del recorrido son las vistas que se aprecian desde los balcones y el tejado, que funciona como un gran mirador. Desde allí se contempla una panorámica fantástica de una de las zonas más bellas del Centro Histórico de La Habana, a un costado el imponente Capitolio Nacional con su brillante cúpula, símbolo de la ciudad; al frente, el Paseo del Prado y el Parque Martí, con sus palmas reales custodiando la escultura del Apóstol cubano, y en el otro extremo la vista se extiende hasta el horizonte, donde el mar se funde con el cielo.

Sin dudas esta es mi parte preferida del recorrido, el cual he realizado en más de una ocasión.

El Teatro Alicia Alonso como lo fue el Tacón en su época, es otra de las reliquias arquitectónicas de la ciudad. Y aunque el antiguo Tacón ya no existe como tal, sigue habitando dentro del Gran Teatro Alicia Alonso como parte de la historia cultural cubana.
