The Garage, Automobile Museum in Havana [EN/ES]

English Version

Sometimes we have no idea how much things evolve over time. That's why I always like to know the origins and beginnings of everything. The development of technology makes everything move very fast nowadays, so I like to look back in time to realise how far we have come to where we are today. This is one of the reasons why I love visiting museums and learning about history and the origin of things.

I am going to tell you about ‘El Garaje’, an automobile museum located in Old Havana, on San Ignacio Street. This museum exhibits several cars that make us think that we are travelling back in time to the early years of the 20th century.

The exhibits of the vehicles in the museum are quite old, with several models dating back to 1914, although the history of automobiles in Cuba begins a little earlier, at the end of 1898, when a Le Parisienne automobile was first driven on the streets of Havana. All this history is told in one of the informative posters of the museum next to the one that was the first car in my country.

The vehicles here are of different makes, many of which we can compare to see what they were like in their early days and how they have been transformed and improved over the years. The development of this industry is impressive. There are brands such as Ford, Pontiac, Cadillac, Alfa Romeo, Rolls Royce, among others.

Some of these cars belonged to different personalities of Cuban history and culture. As a curiosity we can see the popemobile used by Pope Francis during his visit to several of the main cities of Cuba, and a Masserati race car, similar to the one driven by Fangio in 1957 in the Grand Prix held in Havana, with which he won first place.

To finish the tour, on the first floor of the museum there is a collection of motorbikes of different makes and models.

In the 1950's Cuba was one of the countries with the most cars on the streets. Many of them can still be seen today, as they have been passed down from one generation to the next. Nowadays in the island it is very common to see these old cars, not in vain they say that Cuba is considered a museum on wheels.

All the cars in this place are very well cared for and are kept in great condition. This museum is a real discovery in Old Havana that no one should miss.

I hope you have enjoyed this tour around El Garaje (The Garage) of Havana.

Cheers, see you next time!

When I had the opportunity to go to Cuba, I had planned to go to that museum, the truth is that I was very excited but due to a matter of time in the end I could not, and now that I see it in this post I would like to be able to go sometime. Greetings !
