Havana Chinatown Gate [EN/ES]
English version
In the vicinity of the Capitol of Havana, and very close to the Parque de la Fraternidad, there is a somewhat atypical construction within the colonial environment that surrounds it, with a design that is different from anything else that can be seen in its surroundings, and this singularity is precisely what makes it stand out in the urban landscape. I am referring to the entrance gate to Havana's Chinatown.
In colonial Cuba, when the sugar industry was the main economic pillar and therefore demanded a large amount of labour on the sugar cane plantations, Chinese immigrants began to arrive in the country, working in conditions almost comparable to those of slaves. Most of these immigrants settled in an area of Centro Habana where, over time, the city's Chinatown began to take shape.
The gate announcing the entrance to Chinatown is an imposing two-column construction, located between Dragones and Amistad streets. At the top it has a two-tiered roof that reminds me of traditional Chinese pagodas. It is reddish in colour, and the rays of the morning and evening sun reflect off it, giving it a shimmering golden hue. This open entrance to the sun seems to welcome us, or bid us farewell, with its warmth and glow. At the top of the gate there is a set of garlands that turn the place into a beautiful light show at night.
It is the only structure of its kind in the surrounding area and offers a fascinating visual contrast, standing out for its architecture and design. It is impossible to pass by without stopping to admire this beautiful portico.
From this place I have a wide view of the whole avenue, from which I can see another building that always arouses my admiration, the building where the telecommunications company Etecsa is located, known as the Eagle and Dragons building.
This is a grandiose building, whose architecture and design are so beautiful to me that I have always wanted to photograph it in detail. However, every time I walk here, I am in a hurry and only manage to take a few pictures. Although the building is somewhat deteriorated because of its age, I would really like it to be restored as it is still majestic and imposing.
From here I can also see the dome of the National Capitol, a magnificent structure whose golden vault always shines under the sun. Next to it, the Parque de la Fraternidad stretches out like a large green space, with tall ceiba trees and always full of people.
The entrance to Havana's Chinatown is already part of the urban design of the city, with its mixture of epochs, styles and cultures. This great gateway is a landmark, which makes the capital a unique city.
I hope you enjoyed the publication. Best regards, and see you next time!

The entrance gate to Havana’s Chinatown is a striking contrast to its colonial surroundings, blending history and culture beautifully. Its pagoda-style roof and vibrant colors make it an architectural gem. This landmark adds uniqueness to the city, standing as a reminder of Chinese influence in Cuba’s past and present.
Yes, I agree, it is a very unique gate, as it is the only structure of its kind in the surrounding area. A charming gate.
