A Singular Journey Through Havana [EN/ES]
English Version
On one of the four corners of the Plaza Vieja in Havana's historic centre stands the tallest building in the square, the Gómez Vila building. This early 20th century building stands out not only for its height, but also for being the most modern of those surrounding the square. It also has a peculiar viewpoint at its highest point.
On the roof of the building, more than 35 m high, is a very popular attraction among locals and tourists alike, the Camera Obscura. This curious viewpoint offers a unique visual experience, as it allows you to observe a panoramic view of Old Havana and its surroundings in real time.
To get to the top of the building there is a lift that takes you directly to a large rooftop terrace. From this height, in addition to the attraction, there are spectacular views of the city from different angles. From this point a beautiful panorama unfolds, taking in the most emblematic buildings of the capital and the surrounding area, and in the distance the skyline. It is a truly beautiful visual experience.
From here we can see the entire Plaza Vieja, the surrounding colonial buildings with their varied architectural style and colours that create a very picturesque and cheerful atmosphere. In the centre of the square is the fountain and everywhere you can see the visitors on their way through the surroundings. From the top everything looks smaller and in different scales, and the roofs and terraces of the buildings are under our view, so we can see what is hidden from us to the ground, antennas, water tanks, clotheslines or small orchards and gardens.
The Camera Obscura is inspired by a design by Leonardo da Vinci, which in turn is based on the optical principles regarding the use of light to project images, discovered by another brilliant man of science, Aristotle. With the help of a periscope located at the top of the building, images of the city are projected onto a circular screen 1.8 meters in diameter.
In the room where the camera is located, the lights are turned off at the beginning of the projection and almost everything remains in darkness. Only a small hole in the upper part allows light to pass through, marking the beginning of the visual spectacle. The specialist at the site is in charge of explaining how the mechanism works and narrating what we see, people often ask her questions or request that she show them a specific building or place.

The overall result is a panoramic real-time view of the city. This is the most fun and peculiar part, the moving images of cars driving through the streets, boats in the harbor, and people on the balconies and rooftops of their houses, or walking through the streets of Havana. We can see the Havana Malecón and some spots in Vedado, even the Havana Bay. We see exactly what is happening at that moment, like a journey to different places simultaneously.
The most fascinating thing is that without leaving this small space, we can see a large part of Havana, and some things that would go unnoticed if we were walking around on our own. That’s why it’s no surprise that this attraction is so popular, especially during these summer months when families take advantage of the holidays to enjoy the beautiful and interesting things in the city.
I hope you enjoyed the tour, greetings and see you next time!
