Many times we pass by the places we visit every day, and they always seem the same to us, we almost always pass by the streets without really stopping and taking the time to look at our daily surroundings. We focus on emblematic places, on well-known places in our city that appear in photos and postcards but we forget that beauty is also in the everyday, in what we see every day and that most of the time we don't pay attention to.

I live in a simple neighbourhood, and every morning from Monday to Friday, I make the same journey to take my daughter to school. I am usually in a hurry, thinking about all the things I have to do later, the household chores, and so I walk and hardly ever stop to observe what is going on around me. Today however, I decided to do something different. After dropping the child off at school instead of rushing back home, I took a moment to walk leisurely to feel and discover what is really around me.

Then I forgot about the time and the earrings and I started to detail what is happening in the streets I pass by every day. The sky was beautiful, very blue and cloudless, as if it had been freshly painted that morning. The trees were each different, some just beginning to sprout new leaves at this time of year, and others with abundant foliage, and peculiar shapes. Wild flowers grew in the gardens, on the pavements, and in any space of land, simple and brightly coloured.

I also spent some time observing people. I lingered for a while watching the children in the school playground as they did physical exercise, some running in with their backpacks flapping on their backs because they were running a little late. At that time of the morning, everyone was not in a hurry as I often am, the elderly were sitting on the benches, or on a wall chatting quietly, and some people at the entrance of their homes or the neighbours on the pavement of the buildings. It is the common scenario, the one that is always there, but today it appeared different.

In the park there was a group of elderly people doing their morning tai chi exercise routine. This group always meets in the morning to do their physical exercises, always dressed in white. Besides the benefit of this type of exercise for older people, it is also a way for them to socialise and get out of the home and share with other like-minded people. I love it every time I pass by the park and see them together, on this occasion I took some photos of them.

After a while of walking, it was starting to get hot, so I decided to end my morning walk and go home. This is a special time of the year in Cuba, where the heat starts to show, although the mornings are still soft and cosy.

It was a rewarding walk and I realised that you don't always have to be in such a hurry, it is also valuable to stop for a moment to appreciate what has always been there. Sometimes you don't have to travel far or look for spectacular landscapes to find beauty. You just have to open your eyes and observe. Maybe tomorrow in the middle of the rush, I will stop again just to look and discover something new.

Muchas veces pasamos por los lugares que recorremos a diario, y nos parecen siempre los mismos, casi siempre pasamos de largo por las calles sin realmente detenernos y tomarnos un tiempo para ver nuestro entorno cotidiano. Nos enfocamos en lugares emblemáticos, en sitios reconocidos de nuestra ciudad, que aparecen en fotos y postales, pero olvidamos que la belleza también está en lo cotidiano, en aquello que vemos todos los días y que la mayor parte del tiempo no le prestamos atención.

Yo vivo en un barrio sencillo, y cada mañana de lunes a viernes, hago el mismo recorrido para llevar a mi niña a la escuela. Generalmente voy apurada, pensando en todo lo que tengo que hacer después, en los quehaceres domésticos, y así voy caminando y casi nunca me detengo a observar lo que sucede a mi alrededor. Sin embargo, hoy decidí hacer algo diferente. Después de dejar a la niña en la escuela en lugar de regresar rápido a mi casa, me di un momento para caminar sin prisa, para sentir y descubrir lo que realmente hay en mi entorno.

Entonces me olvidé de la hora y de los pendientes y me dediqué a detallar lo que ocurre en las calles por las que paso todos los días. El cielo estaba hermoso, muy azul y sin nubes, como si hubiera sido recién pintado esa mañana. Los árboles diferentes cada uno, algunos recién empiezan a retoñar con hojas nuevas en esta temporada del año, y otros con abundante follaje, y formas peculiares. Las flores silvestres crecían en los jardines, en las aceras, y en cualquier espacio de tierra, sencillas y de intensos colores.

También me dedique a observar a las personas. Me demoré un rato viendo a los niños en el patio de la escuela mientras hacían ejercicio físico, algunos entraban corriendo con sus mochilas agitándose en su espalda porque se les hacia un poco tarde. A esa hora de la mañana, todos no iban apurados como ando yo muchas veces, los ancianos estaban sentados en los bancos, o en algún muro conversando tranquilamente, y algunas personas a la entrada de sus viviendas o las vecinas en la acera de los edificios. Es el escenario común, el que está ahí siempre pero que hoy se presentó diferente.

En el parque había un grupo de personas de la tercera edad que realizan su rutina matutina de ejercicios de tai chi. Este grupo se reúne siempre en la mañana a realizar sus ejercicios físicos, siempre vestidos de blanco. Además del beneficio que representa este tipo de ejercicios en las personas de más edad, es también una manera que tienen de socializar y salir fuera del hogar a compartir con otras personas afines. Me encanta cada vez que paso por el parque y los veo reunidos, en esta ocasión les tome algunas fotos.

Después de un tiempo caminando, ya comenzaba a sentirse el calor, por lo que decidí dar por concluido mi paseo mañanero e irme a mi casa. Este es un tiempo del año especial en Cuba, donde el calor empieza a anunciarse, aunque las mañanas siguen siendo suaves y acogedoras.

Fue un recorrido provechoso y me di cuenta que no hay que andar siempre con tanta prisa, también es valioso detenerse un momento para apreciar lo que siempre ha estado ahí. A veces no hace falta viajar lejos ni buscar paisajes espectaculares para encontrar belleza. Solo hay que abrir los ojos y observar. Quizá mañana en medio de la prisa, vuelva a detenerme solo para mirar y descubrir algo nuevo.
