Old Havana is a place full of charm and touring the colonial part of the city is something I will never get tired of. Even if I pass by the same avenues, the same parks and the same buildings, there is always something new that catches my attention, I always find a new detail that I had not noticed before. Each visit is an opportunity to rediscover that magic.

Nothing stays the same and that depends on many factors, from the weather to the time of day. Its cobblestone streets and colonial buildings are transformed by the light. In the morning they shine under the radiant sun, in the evening they acquire a warm and nostalgic tone, and on a cloudy day the city seems enveloped in a calm and melancholic atmosphere.

On this particular day, the sky was covered with grey clouds and the dim light gave everything a duller tone. As I walked through part of the historic centre of Old Havana, almost without realising it, I arrived at the Castle of the Real Fuerza. From there I walked past the side of the emblematic Templete, the site of the first Catholic mass in the Cuban capital, and out onto Port Avenue, from where we can see the sea, deep and serene, stretching to the horizon with the fortress of El Morro guarding the entrance to the bay.

Walking along the pavement of Port Avenue led me to discover must-see landmarks such as the imposing Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan, with its impressive gold and copper domes crowned by crosses. It is impossible to pass in front of this grand church without stopping to admire it. There are also the old San José Stores, near the sea, where actually Cuban artists and craftsmen have an ideal space to show and sell their work. Nearby, The Bay Promenade offers a spectacular panoramic view of Havana's harbour.

As I went a little further into the interior of the city I arrived at the Old Square, which I have visited on more than one occasion but always surprises me. This is one of those places that always catches the eye, with its colorful colonial buildings that reflect the architecture of another era. Despite the years this is still a space full of life, in this sunset the site was full of people, there were many children with their families and the atmosphere was very lively and cheerful.

From here I started my way back, as it was starting to get dark. Havana is beautiful both during the day and at night but I preferred not to stay late in the streets. I walked down Mercaderes street to Obispo street, and finally reached the Manzana de Gomez from where I continued another stretch to take the shuttle back home.

This tour reminded me why Old Havana always has something new to offer. No matter how many times I walk its streets, there will always be corners to discover, lights that transform it and details that make it special.

La Habana Vieja es un lugar lleno de encanto y recorrer la parte colonial de la ciudad es algo de lo que nunca me voy a cansar. Aunque pase por las mismas avenidas, los mismos parques y las mismas edificaciones, siempre hay algo nuevo que llama mi atención, siempre encuentro un detalle que nuevo, que no había notado antes. Cada visita es una oportunidad para redescubrir esa magia.

Nada permanece igual y eso depende de muchos factores, desde el clima hasta la hora del día. Sus calles adoquinadas y sus edificios coloniales se transforman con la luz. En la mañana brillan bajo el sol radiante, en el atardecer adquieren un tono cálido y nostálgico, y en un día nublado la ciudad parece envuelta en una atmósfera tranquila y melancólica.

Este día en particular, el cielo estaba cubierto de nubes grises y la luz tenue hacía que todo tuviera un tono más apagado. En mi recorrido por parte del casco histórico de La Habana Vieja, casi sin darme cuenta llegué al Castillo de la Real Fuerza. Desde allí pasé por el lateral del emblemático Templete, el lugar donde se realizó la primera misa católica en la capital cubana, y salí a la Avenida del Puerto, desde donde se puede ver el mar, profundo y sereno, extendiéndose hasta el horizonte con la fortaleza de El Morro vigilando la entrada a la bahía.

Caminar por la acera de la Avenida del Puerto me llevó a descubrir lugares de referencia obligada como la imponente Catedral Ortodoxa Rusa Nuestra Señora de Kazán, con sus impresionantes cúpulas doradas y cobrizas coronadas por cruces. Es imposible pasar frente a esta gran iglesia sin detenerse a admirarla. También están los antiguos Almacenes de San José, cerca del mar, donde los artistas y artesanos cubanos tienen un espacio ideal para mostrar y vender sus obras. Muy cerca, el Paseo Marítimo de la Bahía ofrece una vista panorámica espectacular del puerto de la Habana.

Al adentrarme un poco al interior de la ciudad llegué a la Plaza Vieja, la cual he visitado en más de una ocasión, pero siempre me sorprende. Este es uno de esos sitios que siempre atrapan la mirada, con sus coloridas construcciones coloniales que reflejan la arquitectura de otra época. A pesar de los años este sigue siendo un espacio lleno de vida, en este atardecer el sitio estaba lleno de personas, había muchos niños con sus familias y el ambiente era muy animado y alegre.

Desde aquí emprendí el camino de regreso, pues empezaba a oscurecer. La Habana es bella tanto de día como de noche, pero preferí no quedarme hasta tarde en las calles. Caminé por la Calle Mercaderes hasta Obispo, y finalmente llegué a la Manzana de Gómez desde donde seguí otro tramo para tomar el transporte de vuelta a casa.

Este recorrido me recordó por qué la Habana Vieja siempre tiene algo nuevo que ofrecer. No importa cuántas veces la camine por sus calles, siempre habrá rincones por descubrir, luces que la transforman y detalles que la hacen especial.
