If you are are the type that enjoys are relaxed and easy city. NZ will suit you, I will recommend Christchurch though, and if you prefer the North Island, my recommendation will be Wellington. Auckland is okay too but I'm just not really into it.
But cost of living in high! 😫
I am renting a flat share and pay NZD220 weekly which is approximately R2294 weekly.

What about food and other costs? I believe the pay in general is much better and healthcare as well?
A loaf of bread like Albany in South Africa 🇿🇦 costs NZD3.50 here which is equivalent to R36.55.
Well as for me in my industry, the pay am getting here can't be compared with SA, I was basically robbed in SA to put it simple. So if one earns fairly okay, and not a lavish spender, life in NZ is affordable. Healthcare is also good but there are more Healthcare providers in SA than here. And the Healthcare is expensive though but am lucky to be on medical aid provided by the company I work for.
what happens to people who can't afford medical aid? What is the government health sector like?
As long as one is a Resident, there are medical aid but from what I read before moving over, I can't get free medical aid if I am not a Resident yet but instances might also vary.
Generally treatment in NZ is fairly and accommodating.
what happens if you're not a resident, but are on a work visa for instance? perhaps working toward becoming a resident (and what does that entail?)?
I am on work visa, critical skill, tier 2. There are several ways to working towards resident by earning points.
It could be earning points via, higher wages, more work experience in NZ, Level 3 or above certification etc.
There are options to becoming resident, not easy but also not unreasonable difficult. I actually prefer their system here compared to my 15 years stay in South Africa that earned me no residence.
Here's a link to getting all you need to know about NZ immigration: https://www.immigration.govt.nz/visas/accredited-employer-work-visa/
Wow, ok, so you can essentially earn your ways there? Yeah, South African immigration laws a hectic. Thank you for the fascinating information!
Yes as for me I am working towards earning points. Good luck to me 😀🙏
You are most welcome
Well you're certainly on the right path!
