Am stuck in Tasman-Nelson as the region is declared states of emergency

I traveled down to Motueka for work in Tasman and Kaiteriteri in Nelson yesterday. The plan is to return to Christchurch tomorrow, but after last nights rain, I couldn't get to the two cell tower sites due to road closures from the heavy downpour that led to severe flooding.

Since I can't work on these planned sites, I embarked on a drive back to Christchurch.

It wasn't long in my drive that I had to go through the first flood that is about 500-600cm high.

Within 54km distance, I went through four floods. My turn from Motueka Valley Highway onto SH6 was met with road closure. There has been a slid in the road further on SH6.

A lot of motorists can't proceed to Christchurch. Some cars are stuck at Kohatu Flat Rock because the flood has risen going back to Motueka. I managed to drive back to Motueka in much higher flood tides and more floods about 9 instead of 4 when I passed earlier.

Am now at the motel until the road is open. It might take days due to the road slid. Will see how it goes.

This is my first experience of natural disasters and driving through it. I could have gotten stuck in the flood.

Oh my… stay safe Joe
Natural disasters can be terrifying.
Hope the floods go down quickly and they repair the road so you can drive back.

It is quite bad and concerning.
An emergency alert ⚠️ went off on my phone now. I will stay alert. Hopefully the rain stops and the rising floods subsides.
Thank you Jackie

Your place is perfect, sir, even though there is a bit of a strong flood, there is also a bridge so it won't be difficult for people to get here for work or travel.

The bridge is only a section, the flood have been quite damaging. The rain have eased at the moment hopefully it stays that way.

Let's just pray, dear friend, that it won't happen again and that it will be far away because we can't predict the weather when the water suddenly rises and then it rains heavily.

A tense experience. Thank goodness you're in a safe place now. Hopefully the rain will not continue so that the flooding will subside quickly.

It was a tense one, looking back to yesterday through those floods i was lucky not to get stuck as some people are homeless due to the floods. The forecast shows little rain today so that's good.
