From 'Backyard Mess' to Fungi Fun – Meet the Mysterious White 'Ghost Mushrooms' That Popped Up Overnight on My Old Rotting Log

Okay so like… remember when i was complaining about how my backyard’s been looking like a total mess ever since all that rain we had last week? Well turns out the “mess” is actually this cool cluster of white fungi that just popped up out of nowhere on that old rotting log i have been meaning to move for… uh… let’s not talk about how long it’s been there haha..

First time I saw ‘em I did a double take one minute the log was just dark, crusty wood covered in dead leaves, the next there’s these plump, creamy white discs huddled together like they are having a secret meeting. Some are super smooth and round almost like little saucers while others look a bit squished or have tiny dirt specks stuck to them guess that’s what happens when you are growing wild in someone’s yard!

They are not super big or anything most are about the size of my palm maybe smaller and they grow in these tight little groups that make the whole log look like it’s sprouting weird white buttons..

I will be honest at first i was lowkey freaked out ‘cause i know some mushrooms can be really bad news if you mess with them. My mom always told me never to touch or eat anything growing in the yard unless we know what it is and trust me im not about to go chomping on these guys!

But after just staring at them for a bit (yeah I know, I’m weird), I started thinking about how cool nature is. That log was basically dead and useless and now it’s giving life to something else even if it’s just fungus.

The kids next door saw ‘em too and started calling them “ghost mushrooms” ‘cause of how pale they are against the dark wood. They wanted to pick them to make fairy houses but i made them promise to just look instead better safe than sorry right?

Plus there’s something kind of nice about knowing there’s a little wild spot in my own backyard where stuff can just grow and do its thing without me having to plant or water it.

I have been checking on them every day since i noticed them some of the older ones are starting to get a little yellow around the edges and a few have even gotten these thin stringy bits coming off them. Not gonna lie im kinda curious what would be happen to them next will they spread more? Dry up when the sun comes out? Either way it’s been way more interesting than pulling weeds or mowing the lawn!
