RE: The Mad Max Laptop: Rescuing an 11-Year-Old Dell

That is good going. I have a six year old laptop that needs replacing now. It runs so slow. It’s a shame really, do you think replacing the battery can make it run faster?

Maybe, but not necessarily. Some laptops, don't have a way to run without a battery, so, even if you have them plugged in, the battery is still passing the energy to the motherboard. When the battery is bad, in these laptops, then the computer may throttle the speed of the cpu's to compensate. think of it like a "battery saving mode" - the problem is, an old battery never charges.
That said, more often than not, speed on old computers comes from bigger requirements from software and bloat. This is kind of why its always a good idea on windows computers (the most common still) to format and get a fresh install every year or so.
If your laptop does not have a SSD, which is possible, given its six years old, that might be the best way to speed it up. That, and a fresh install.
