Project: Pulang Agila (Red Eagle)

I conceptualized this project more than a year ago. My objective is to promote not just the Filipino Martial Arts or Modern Arnis through this character, but also to promote traditional Filipino weapons, clothing and culture that's fading or long forgotten.
Suffice to say, I need to do a lot of research for this project.

The character design has undergone a lot of changes. The latest revision is quite minor though. I changed the color of his armor from brown to dark gray.

In this post, I wanted to share the process of making this version.

Equipment and App

I used my Huawei 10.4 inch MatePad with Gen 2 Stylus and Medibang Paint for Mobile.
##The Process

1. The Digital Sketch

I started with a digital sketch. In this version, I decided not to include the salakot.

I decided to draw the face paint on a separate layer.

2. Coloring and Detailing

I added the base colors for the skin and the costume. I also added the face paint and the tattoos.

###3. Shading and Additional Details.
I added a few more layers for the dark shades and other details.

###4. Highlights and Background
Lastly, I added some highlights on his arm guards to give them a metallic look.

Using Genko and Fluffy brushes I painted the background with blue and red that it would look like the Philippine flag. I also drew a bird like figure just behind his head.
