At the south end of Urdaneta Avenue in my town, you can always see a huge old FIAT truck loaded with a huge wad of rice shells protruding well above the profile of the cab of this vehicle... This truck is somewhat one of my “favorite fetishes” for street photography. I think I have observed this huge vehicle parked on that street for more than a decade now... So today morning, when I peeked my head out my bedroom window and saw the streets wet from an overnight drizzle and the sky with a very low cloud ceiling barely letting through the whitish glow of the sun, my first thought was to take my camera and walk up to where that old truck is parked and take some pictures.... I've done it before, but every time I go there I find something better than before to photograph... This time the story is not only about the old truck, I ended up photographing several blocks of that street sequentially, with all the necessary calm to reflect through images the quiet daily life of that southern end of the town... I invite you to continue with this publication and enjoy my photos and at the same time read a little more about this today's story in “a single street”...

En el extremo sur de la Avenida Urdaneta de mi pueblo, siempre se puede ver un enorme y viejo camión FIAT cargado con un enorme fajo da concha de arroz que sobresale muy por encima del perfil dela cabina de este vehículo... Este camión es una especie de mis "fetiches favoritos" para la fotografía callejera. Creo que he observado este enorme vehículo parqueado en esa calle desde hace más de una década.... Así que hoy en la mañana, cuando asomé mi cabeza por la ventana de mi habitación y vi las calles humedecidas por una llovizna caída durante la noche y el cielo con un techo de nubes muy bajo apenas dejando pasar el resplandor blanquecino del sol, lo primero en lo que pensé fue en tomar mi cámara y caminar hasta el lugar donde ese viejo camión está y hacerle algunas fotos... Ya lo he hecho ant4es, pero cada vez que voy encuentro algo mejor que antes para fotografiar allí... Esta vez la historia no es solo acerca del viejo camión, terminé fotografiando varias cuadras de esa calle en forma secuencial, con toda la calma necesaria como para reflejar a través de imágenes el tranquilo acontecer cotidiano de ese extremo sur del pueblo... I arrived at Urdaneta Avenue through Rondón Street and just as I crossed the corner, I had the nose of the old FIAT truck in front of me. However, I immediately noticed the presence in the distance of a woman sweeping the street and this prompted me to take pictures combining the environment and the vehicle in the same shot. At the same time I got it into my head that this would be a street shoot focused on the scenery of that particular street and, although I continued to take pictures of the old truck, I was already forging a handful of ideas to turn this morning into a kind of illustrated reportage with the details around...

Llegué a la Av. Urdaneta por la Calle Rondón y justo al cruzar en la esquina, tuve el morro del viejo camión FIAT de frente a mi. Sin embargo, de inmediato per percaté de la presencia a lo lejos de una mujer barriendo la calle y esto me impulsó a hacer fotos combinando el entorno y el vehículo en el mismo plano. Al mismo tiempo se me metió en la cabeza que esta sería una sesión de fotos callejera enfocada en el escenario de esa calle en particular y, aunque continué haciendo fotos del camión viejo, ya estaba fraguando un puñado de ideas para convertir esta mañana en una especie de reportaje ilustrado con los detalles alrededor...

The semi-cloudy weather contributed a lot to the character of these photographs which I share with you today. This kind of flat, soft and even brightness is something ideal for working with wide apertures, varied focal lengths (I used an 18-200mm zoom lens for this) and worrying much less about excesses of contrast that are difficult to correct later during processing... After satisfying my compulsive need to take pictures of the old truck, I proceeded to walk several blocks down the avenue and focused on the woman sweeping the street in the distance, an old window in a decaying wall and the facade of an old house with a metal sheet roof, which seemed to have been painted with a lot of slovenliness or carelessness...

El clima semi-nublado contribuyó bastante al carácter de estas fotografías las cuales comparto con ustedes hoy. Este tipo de luminosidad plana, suave y pareja, es algo ideal para trabajar con aperturas amplias, distancias focales variadas (usé un lente zoom 18-200mm para esto) y preocuparse mucho menos por excesos de contraste difíciles de corregir posteriormente durante el procesado... Después de satisfacer mi compulsiva necesidad de hacer fotos del viejo camión, procedí a recorrer varias cuadras de la avenida y enfoqué en la mujer barriendo la calle en la distancia, una vieja ventana en una pared en ruina y en la facha de una vieja casa con techo de lamina de metal, la cual parecía haber sido pintada con mucho desgano o desparpajo...

Finally, a fat and practically unperturbed pigeon wandered down the street defying the passage of people, dogs and vehicles, finished making my day... I gave this cute bird a handful of pictures and ended up sitting on the pavement waiting for it to fly away so I could take a photo of it in flight after which I pretended to go home for breakfast... The pigeon seemed so calm that, I had to end up standing up and making some noises while waving my arms, only then the pigeon decided to fly and I could take the desired photo...

Por último, un gordo y prácticamente e imperturbable pichón deambulaba por la calle desafiando el paso de personas, perros y vehículos, terminó de hacer mi día... Le dediqué a esta simpática ave un puñado de fotografías y terminé sentado en la calzada esperando a que volase para poder hacerle una foto en vuelo después de la cual pretendía volver a mi casa para desayunar... El pichón parecía tan calmado qué, tuve que terminar por ponerme de pie y hacer algunos ruidos mientras agitaba mis brazos, solo así el pichón decidió volar y pude hacer la foto deseada...

There was one photo that I didn't dare to take, it was the one of the face of the woman sweeping the street looking at me while making noises and waving my arms to make the pigeon fly... 🤣 I'll have to come back sometime to this street and repeat this a little bit...

Hubo una foto que la cual no me atreví hacer, fue la del rostro de la mujer que barría de la calle mirándome mientras hacía ruidos y agitaba mis brazos para hacer que el pichón volase... 🤣 Tendré que volver alguna vez a esta calle y repetir un poco esto...
