September is almost over, and I feel the need to start taking stock, reviewing, and sorting through my archives. All of this so I don't leave behind some photos which, at least in my humble opinion, are enchanting... And this time I dedicated my time to searching for shadows from these last few days. And of course, also lights, because shadows cannot exist without their lights. And if there were only light, without any shadows, then there is nothing... And yes, as I write this, I'm inventing some attempt at poetry that even I don't understand, but it pleases me. But let's move on, enough with all the fuss, let's look at these September photos with shadows and lights...

Casi ya se nos marcha Septiembre y se me hace necesario comenzar a hacer recuentos, revisiones y recorridos de mis archivos. Todo eso para no dejar detrás algunas fotos las cuales, cuando menos en mi humilde opinión, son encantadoras... Y esta vez dediqué a mi tiempo a buscar sombras de estos últimos días. Y por supuesto, también luces, porque las sombras no pueden existir sin sus luces. Y si solo hubiera luz, sin ninguna sombra, entonces es porque no hay nada... Y sí, mientras escribo esto, me estoy inventando algún conato de poesía de esos que ni siquiera yo mismo comprendo, pero me place. Pero pasemos adelanta, basta de tanta alharaca, mejor miremos estas fotos de Septiembre con sombras y luces...

My father died just six years ago, so life allowed him to look at many of my photographs. He was an artist, or rather, a "mild artist." He enjoyed painting with oils and chalk, and he also enjoyed wood carving. He was even frequently asked to be a jury member at exhibitions and galleries. Dad was delighted when, more than twenty years ago, I started taking photographs. I guess his joy was because I never learned to paint (and look at all the books, canvases, watercolors, brushes, oil paintings and so on that were given to me) and much less how to carve wood or anything like that... So when I started taking photos, Dad liked to tell me: Jesus, you finally found your brushes... But a while later, when I immersed myself in the world of black and white street photography, Dad also said: Wow, you like to photograph the "counterfeit"... And when I asked him what he meant by using that term, he answered "what others may find ugly"... That stayed marked in my memory per saecula and since then..

Mi padre murió hace apenas 6 años, así que la vida le permitió mirar muchas de mis fotografías. El era artista, o "medianamente artista" mejor dicho. Le gustaba pintar con oleos y tizas, también le gustaba tallar madera. Incluso era frecuente que le buscasen para ser jurado en exposiciones y galerías... Papá se alegró mucho cuando, ya más de veinte años atrás, yo comencé a hacer fotos. Supongo que su alegría se debía a que yo nunca aprendí a pintar (y mire que me obsequiaron libros, lienzos, acuarelas, pinceles, oleos y demás) y mucho menos a hacer tallas de madera o cosa por el estilo... Así que cuando comencé a hacer fotos Papá gustaba de decirme: Jesús, finalmente encontraste tus pinceles... Pero un tiempo más adelante, cuando me sumergí en el mundo de la fotografía callejera en blanco y negro, Papá también decía: Caray, te gusta fotografiar lo "contrahecho"... Y cuando le pregunté qué quería decir al usar ese termino contestaba "lo que a otros les puede parecer feo"... Eso se me quedó marcado en mi memoria per saecula y desde entonces...

Do you see my shadows?... I'm not just talking about the shadows on my streets. I have shadows myself, and I try to let them escape and make them fade away in these photos... It's not always easy to live with my shadows, especially when they tend to become darker than my few lights can be... Do you see my shadows?... I do. I see them when they play at leaving, but they come back...

¿Ves mis sombras?... No me refiero solo a las sombras de mis calles. Yo mismo tengo sombras e intento dejarlas escapar y hacer que se vayan lejos en estas fotos... No siempre es fácil vivir con mis sombras, en especial cuando tienden a hacerse más obscuras que lo brillante que puedan ser mis pocas luces... ¿Ves mis sombras?... Yo sí, las veo cuando juegan a marcharse, pero vuelven...

They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape v3.7}
