This is a selection of recent street photographs taken during the mornings in the town where I have always lived (Montalbán, Edo. Carabobo, Venezuela)... I walk these streets almost daily, partly as a catharsis, partly as therapy, partly as a photographer, partly as an observer and partly as habitant... Half a century ago, when I was just a child, the town was different. It was, you could say, more prosperous, brighter and with more people living there.... Things have changed a lot since then, but I will not go into details, because it seems to me that it is enough to look at my photographs to show and make you understand how it is here now... Nor am I complaining or “ripping my clothes ”. I am here on my own free will, since more than half of my family has left here and surely I would have left too if I had wanted to do so... But in truth, I think I'm still here simply because: “I take pictures”... Yes, it may sound quite strange, but here many things are strange, so I don't fall out of place after all...

Esta es una selección de fotografías callejeras recientes hechas durante las mañanas en el pueblo en donde vivo desde siempre (Montalbán, Edo. Carabobo, Venezuela)... Recorro estas calles casi a diario, en parte como catarsis, en parte como terapia, en parte como fotógrafo, en parte como observador y en parte como habitante... Medio sigo atrás, cuando yo era apenas un niño, e3l pueblo era distinto. Era, podría decirse, más prospero, más luminoso y con más personas habitándolo... Las cosas han cambiando mucho desde entonces, pero no entraré en detalles, pues me parece que basta con mira mis fotografías para mostrar y hacer entender como es aquí ahora... Tampoco estoy quejándome ni "rasgando mis vestiduras". Estoy aquí por voluntad propia, pues más de la mitad de mi familia se ha ido de aquí y seguramente yo también lo hubiese hecho si así lo hubiese querido... Pero la verdad, creo que sigo aquí simplemente porque: "hago fotos"... Sí, puede que suene bastante extraño, pero aquí muchas cosas son extrañas, así que no desentono después de todo...

Despite the bad times, the people are still trying to move forward. I guess that turning a blind eye to the palpable decay, invests most of the people here with a very high level of resilience... People are getting used to the cracked streets, the faded facades, the weeds on the sidewalks, the half-finished or even ruined buildings and a lot of things typical of villages in frank involution... Even the exodus of the population is taken with a certain humor by some who say: “Now Montalbán is here and in many parts of the world”... That's how we are!... 🤷‍♂

A pesar de los tiempos malos, el pueblo sigue intentando seguir adelante. Supongo que hacer la vista gorda a la palpable decadencia, reviste a la mayoría de las personas aquí con un nivel resiliencia muy alto... La gente se va a costumbrando quizás sin percatarse, a las calles agrietadas, las fachadas descoloridas, la maleza en las veredas, las construcciones a medio terminar o incluso en ruinas y a un montón de cosas típicas de los pueblos en franca involución... Incluso el éxodo de la población es tomado con cierto humor por algunos que dicen cosas: "Ahora Montalbán está aquí y en muchas partes del mundo"... ¡Así somos!... 🤷‍♂

Anyway, as I said before: “it looks like I'm here taking pictures” and this is especially nice to do (regardless of the high level of visual drama) in the mornings and, it's even better, if those mornings are wrapped in that fantastic morning fog and we've had some early morning downpour, which fills the streets with humidity making them even more interesting. And much of this happens in June, this month where the weather is unpredictable, anarchic and capricious, generating the unexpected in every street view that you have the pleasure to dive into...

En fin, tal como fije ante: "tal parece que estoy aquí haciendo fotos" y esto es especialmente agradable de hacer (indistintamente del alto nivel de drama visual) en la mañanas. Y es aún mejor, si esas mañanas están envueltas en esa fantástica niebla matutina y hemos tenido algún aguacero en la madrugada, el cual llena de humedad las calles haciéndolas aún más interesantes. Y mucho de esto sucede en Junio, este mes en donde el clima es impredecible, anárquico y caprichoso, generando lo inesperado en cada visión callejera en la que uno tiene el pacer de sumergirse...
