I spent an afternoon last week going through the drawers of the cabinets in my small studio and some boxes which I have and I use to store old things that I'm not using anymore... The best surprise that day was to open a drawer and see a small bag the size of the palm of my hand and when I opened it I found my old CANON PowerShot SX110 IS compact camera whose whereabouts I had forgotten until now.... I checked it a bit and noticed that its rechargeable AA batteries (kept in a small pocket of the same bag) had started to sulfate at the poles. Then I deduced that having found this camera that day was very fortunate, because if it had remained there, surely the battery components would have leaked in greater quantity and caused some damage to this small camera...

Estuve una tarde la pasada semana revisando las gavetas de los archivadores em mi pequeño estudio y algunas cajas que tengo y allí las cuales uso para almacenar cosas viejas que ya no estoy usando... La mejor sorpresa de ese día fue abrir una gaveta y ver un pequeño bolso del tamaño de la palma de mi mano y al abrirlo encontrar mi vieja cámara compacta CANON PowerShot SX110 IS cuyo paradero había olvidado hasta ahora... La revisé un poco y noté que sus baterías AA recargables (guardadas en un bolsillo del pequeño del mismo bolso) habían comenzado a sulfatar en los polos. Entonces deduje que haber encontrado esta cámara ese día fue muy afortunado, pues de haber continuado allí, seguramente los componentes de las baterías habrían derramado en mayor cuantía y causado algún daño a esta pequeña cámara...

As far as I remember, the CANON PowerShot SX110 IS was my first camera with full manual mode, so using it was how I definitely learned to manage aperture, shutter speed, ISO and other settings.... I don't intend to saturate you by posting endless specs of this compact camera here. I will only tell you that it barely weighs 245 grams, it has no RAW mode and beyond ISO 400 the digital noise is quite annoying in the pictures taken with it.... Según yo recuerdo, la CANON PowerShot SX110 IS fue mi primera cámara con modo totalmente manual, así que usándola fue como aprendí de manera definitiva a gestionar los parámetros de apertura, velocidad de obturación, ISO y otros... No pienso saturarlos colocando un sinfín de especificaciones de esta cámara compact aquí. Solo le diré que apenas pesa 245 gramos, no tiene modo RAW y más allá del ISO 400 el ruido digital es bastante molesto en las fotos que se hacen con ella... Well, the interesting thing here is that I decided to charge a couple of new batteries and put them in this camera to go out and take pictures very early today in some of the streets I frequent the most near my neighborhood... I invite you to go ahead and enjoy my photos and comments about my experience today after a long time without using this camera...

Y bien, lo interesante aquí es que decidí poner a cargar un par de baterías nuevas y colocárselas a esta cámara para salir a hacer fotos hoy muy temprano en algunas de las calles que más frecuento cerca de mi vecindario... Les invito entonces a continuar adelante y disfrutar de mis fotos y comentarios acerca de mi experiencia de hoy después mucho tiempo sin usar esta cámara...

Antes de salir de casa, puse el dial de la cámara en modo semi-automático de apertura (A), fijé el ISO en 400 (en nivel máximo que se puede usar en esta cámara a mi juicio, sin sufrir demasiado ruido digital) y la temperatura de los blancos en "nublado" pues tuvimos una mañana de cielos encapotados aquí. Lo primero que percibí fue la falta que me hacía un visor óptico para componer la foto en lugar de hacerlo en la pantalla, la cual es la única opción de esta cámara, poco después me percaté de cuan lento es el enfoque automático y el posterior tiempo de guardado de la foto hasta poder hacer el siguiente disparo. Así que hacer fotos callejeras con esta cámara me obligó a pensar diferente casi de inmediato. Sin embargo, debo confesar que unas cuantas fotos y treinta minutos después, me encontré a mi mismo haciendo fotografías de manera casi instintiva y preocupándome únicamente por ajustar la apertura del diafragma, el zoom y el nivel de exposición en cada foto según lo considerase necesario...

Before leaving home, I set the camera dial to semi-automatic aperture mode (A), set the ISO to 400 (the maximum level that can be used in this camera in my opinion, without suffering too much digital noise) and the white temperature to “cloudy” as we had a morning of overcast skies here. The first thing I noticed was the lack of an optical viewfinder to compose the photo instead of doing it on the screen, which is the only option of this camera, soon after I realized how slow is the autofocus and the subsequent time to save the photo until the next shot can be taken. So taking street photos with this camera forced me to think differently almost immediately. However, I must confess that a few shots and thirty minutes later, I found myself taking pictures almost instinctively and worrying only about adjusting the aperture, zoom and exposure level on each photo as I felt necessary...

I used this camera very little time (because of that, it is very well preserved and seems to operate at 100%) as shortly after I bought it and learned to use the manual modes, I remember acquiring my first DSLR, a Nikon D3100 which I still own and use very occasionally. I remember using this Canon camera for close-ups and macros of insects back in 2009 and up to 2010, a time when I had a passion for photographing our local insects and sending the photos to groups of enthusiasts to provide ID... This is a very good camera for that, as it can shoot 1 centimeter away from anything in macro focus mode and with the minimum focal length (6 mm) without making use of optical zoom.... I sure enjoyed taking pictures of bugs back in the day!...

Usé esta cámara muy poco tiempo (debido a eso, está muy bien conservada y parece operar al 100%) pues poco después de haberla comprado y aprendido a usar los modos manuales, recuerdo que adquirí mi primera DSLR, una Nikon D3100 la cual aún poseo y uso muy de vez en cuando. Recuerdo que usaba esta cámara Canon para hacer acercamientos y macros de insectos allá por 2009 y hasta 2010, época en la cual tenía afición por fotografiar nuestros insectos locales y enviar las fotos a grupos de entusiastas para que pre proveyeran su ID... Esta es una cámara muy buena para eso, pues puede disparar a 1 centímetro de distancia de cualquier cosa en modo de enfoque macro y con la distancia focal mínima (6 mm) sin hacer uso del zoom óptico... ¡Sí que disfruté haciendo fotos de bichos en aquellos días caray!...

I took only street photos today and on my way home I went straight to my PC and proceeded to download the memory of this camera and then edit the photos. The first thing I felt was not having the RAW format, as it is RAW based where I do more than 90% of my photo editing work. So I had to make do with direct JPG editing using Photoshop... Man, did I feel strange, as in JPG everything seems to work differently!... Levels adjustments, sharpening, and highlights became a bit strange and capricious, but a few photos later, I was acting instinctively again and bringing each photo to a point that seemed right to me... By the way, which I don't usually do, but this time I placed in the lower right corner of each photo, some data of the settings used. I thought that maybe they could be interesting for someone here in #Hive who is taking his first steps with photos in manual or semi-automatic modes...

Hice únicamente fotos de calle hoy y cuando volvía a mi casa me fui directo a mi PC y procedí a descargar la memoria de esta cámara para luego editar las fotos. Lo primero que sentí fue no contar con el formato RAW, pues es basado en RAW en donde hago más del 90%de mi trabajo de edición fotográfica. Así que tuve que arreglármelas con la edición directa en JPG usando Photoshop... ¡Vaya que me sentí extraño, pues en JPG todo parece funcionar distinto!... Los ajustes de niveles, el afilado, y las luces se me hicieron un tanto extraños y caprichosos, pero pocas fotos después, ya estaba actuando nuevamente de manera instintiva y llevando cada foto a un punto que me pareciese correcto... Por cierto, cosa que no acostumbro hacer, pero esta vez coloqué en la esquina inferior derecha de cada foto, algunos datos de los ajustes usados. Me pareció que quizás pudiesen resultar interesantes para alguien que aquí en #Hive que esté dando sus primero pasos con las fotos en modos manuales o semi-automáticos...

Mientras editaba estas fotos, recordé mis primeros días editando fotos en esquemas monocromáticos y como usaba la herramienta de Photoshop "Blanco y Negro" para logar ajustes de luminosidad por cada color antes de ajustar niveles de luz y contraste... Así que obviamente me puse a aditar otras de esas fotos en formato JPG de hoy para blanco y negro y esas son las que verán de aquí en adelante en esta publicación...

While editing these photos, I remembered my early days editing photos in monochromatic schemes and how I used the Photoshop tool “Black and White” to achieve brightness adjustments for each color before adjusting light levels and contrast... So obviously I started to add some more of those photos in JPG format today for black and white and those are the ones you will see from now on in this post...

Despite the limitations of a compact camera from 2009, with no RAW and only 9 MP resolution and a rather weak dynamic range; I must say that I enjoyed a lot my experience today using my old CANON PowerShot SX110 IS... I think I will repeat this often and avoid this old little camera feeling forgotten 😂... Besides: One feels very happy going through life with that little thing of less than 250 grams in a pocket ready to take some picture!

A pesar de las limitaciones propias de una cámara compacta del 2009, sin RAW y con solo 9 MP de resolución y un rango dinámico bastante débil; debo decir que disfruté un montón mi experiencia de hoy usando mi vieja CANON PowerShot SX110 IS... Creo que repetiré esto con frecuencia y así evitaré que esta vieja y pequeña cámara se sienta olvidada 😂... Además: ¡Se siente uno muy feliz yendo por la vida con esa pequeña cosa de menos de 250 grams en un bolsillo lista para hacer alguna foto!

I liked the results I achieved on these photos, especially on the photos I converted to B&W.... In fact, the time spent on each photo is just a fraction of the time spent on average on a photo made using my also already old (and about five or six times heavier, by the way 😂) Nikon D7000 DSLR... Obviously, when I look at these photos on my my monitor, I immediately notice the long difference in detail, volume, sharpness and more versus photos made with my DSLRs... But I don't know, I find some of that “ handcrafted charm” that I love so much in this experience today... It's good to do this from time to time. I mean trying to do as much as possible with the most basic tool... That teaches us to be better photographers, I think... I don't know, I say that from my way of thinking, and sometimes I tend to be very idealistic and bordering on the elementary... 🙂

A mi me han gustado los resultados que logré en estas fotos, especialmente en las fotos que viré a B&W... De hecho, el tiempo de trabajo en cada foto es apenas una fracción del invertido en promedio en una foto hecha usando mi también ya vieja (y unas cinco o seis veces más pesada, por cierto 😂) DSLR Nikon D7000... Obviamente, cuando veo estas fotos en mi mi monitor, me percato de inmediato de la diferencia larga que hay en lo relativo a detalle, volumen, nitidez y más versus fotos hechas con mis DSLR... Pero no sé, encuentro algo de ese "encanto artesanal" que tanto amo en esta experiencia de hoy... Es bueno hacer esto de vez en cuando. Me refiero a intentar hacer lo más posible con la herramienta más básica... Eso nos enseña a ser mejores fotógrafos, pienso... No sé, lo digo desde mu manera de pensar, y a veces suelo ser muy idealista y rayano en lo elemental... 🙂
